Default Teacher, moving to SC (possibly Walterboro, Rock Hill, York, Chester)

Hi--I posted before. I am just trying to get all my ducks in a row and do my research before making the plunge. I am an English teacher and will be making around 30,000-32,000. Right now I have interviews in Walterboro, York and Chester. I am looking to live in a rural area that is within easy reach of civilization. I want a quiet area to come home to and be close enough to drive out and shop and experience life over the weekend and on holidays.

I am currently in TN, and the cost of living is very low here..but there is also NO WORK in Eastern TN--at least not in the way of teaching. So, it's either stay here and make $8 an hour as a secretary or bust out and try to make it in SC.

Prior to living in TN, I was in the Tampa Bay area of Florida and worked as a teacher there--with essentially the same salary--In fact, in one county (Hernando), I made a bit less.

So, I am prepared to be hit in the face with high cost of living. I know about the personal property tax...(Bracing myself for the damage for a 2000 nissan sentra with close to 97,000 miles).

My question is based on the areas I mentioned (York, Chester, Rock Hill, Walterboro), would it be safe to say that the cost of living will still be a little lower than Florida? I paid $670 for a 2 bedroom apartment in Spring Hill!

I don't need to be in Charlotte. I just want simple accomodation in a safe area.

It has been 2 years since your post. What ended up happening? Are you still in eastern TN?

Check out Lancaster County, SC... it's a good mix of rural + easy Charlotte access. Just a straight shot up Hwy 521 into South Charlotte.

here's a local site w/ info: 29SEVEN20

Chester's not bad either
