I'm no expert but have done my share of upgrading/decorating in homes. Some things such as kitchen/bath upgrades are worth the expense to have the builder do it. Also, I would recommend having the builder put in wood floors before the move if this is an option you want as it's a pain to do it later after all your furniture,etc is already in. Other things such as upgraded light fixtures,etc can be found cheaper on your own. I guess it would depend on your handyman abilities too as labor prices are often where the real expense lies.
