My first thought was...you created a attention grabbing title
True...I was shooting high. But only to spark lots of coversation.
My second thought was....if this is a Non-Fiction story then you need to change your facts (due to...if indeed you were near Sun City off 521..you were actually in Indian Land, SC)
It happened two addressed up from the corner of Jim Wilson road. I know what I saw. And despite that corner being very near Indian Land HS, the Pulte development one mile up Jim Wilson has Fort Mill addresses. If I'm wrong, it was because of my still limited knowledge of the area.
My third thought was...how can someone driving along a road at speeds of anywhere from 25 to 45mph manage to witness another driver who "sped by" coming from the opposite side of the road...give a look to another person to "your" left...that transcended generations of social economic unrest (to top it off this all had to occur in a fraction of a second)
The Mercades was slowing before the turn. I was still proceeding slowly from having taken a left from 521. I was hyper-attentive because I'm thinking 'this may be my new road!' Yes, the word speeding is not exact, but I recall him not slowing much for the turn...reminded me years of Jersey driving.
My fourth thought was...this story just keeps getting better...
Just telling the truth.
My fifth thought was...you drank to much at the bar
I wasn't there to drink, but to observe the culture, relax, and meet people. Plus, I enjoy playing pool. The two gentlemen who shared choice comments appeared to be regulars. They perhaps had too much to drink. It was, to be exact, the small bar located in the back of the Plaza Hotel on Carowinds Boulevard.
My sixth and final thought was...you would be an excellent author penning fictional stories.
I have no interest in fiction.
Moral of the story: Don't read to much into a quick glance...and actually stop and talk to folks around here before a story is created without words.
I appreciate the advice about not reading into things. Perhaps I did that, re. the drive by. As for stopping to talk to folks, I want to do as much of that as possible. Sorry if this initial attempt to do so ruffled some feathers (but not nearly as sorry as I am for my attempt to get to know locals at the Plaza Hotel Bar!)

You don't really need to start to high around here to spark a conversation.
Jason I don't regret trying to help you at all (in regard to finding employment with the Fort Mill Schools)...don't really know how much help I truly was..but I do wish you the best of luck.
What I do regret...is that you did not check with me first in regard to the Plaza Hotel. I never..ever suggest folks stay in that area (to much riff raff..and crime)...and I'd also be more than happy to suggest a better place for you to hang out too...if you wish...
I am neither a native nor a local (unless living here close to 4 years now makes me a local..I'm originally from the West Coast). The reason I am on this site is to share with folks some of the great things that I have fallen in love with in the Carolina's (the includes not only the landscape but the people as well). The only thing I would like people to do when coming into a new area...is come here with out any preconcieved notions...and just enjoy. Some times I think we all read to much into so little.
Take care
p.s. the area in question...is in fact Indian Land (it is a zip code issue...more about it can be found on the SC side)

Now...for the person that gave me the negative rep for my original response to Jason. In addition the following comment was also left: You might be the most arrogant person on the Charlotte board. Southern grace obviously missed you!
I would like to respond:
I have been on this site close to 1 1/2 years now...with over 1,200 posts/threads. Yours is the FIRST negative rep I have ever rec'd. I am rarely on the Charlotte side of this board (most often I can be found on the SC side). Oh...and I am still trying to learn Southern Grace...as I've only lived in the Carolina's now for close to 4 years...but I must be picking up on something...cause if I still had all my California ways....I would have more than a few choice words for you!

And its good to have Loves Mountains around to skewer... Jason ever think that look could be indigestion?
Though I do have one or two SC stories that would shake your head--that's what they are, one or two experiences, I'll try not to convict the state. Or expand it to another state...
Commuters I need your help on the 2nd commute post if you travel from anywhere in the 'burbs to Uptown. I'm making a simple Google Mashup with commute times I'll be happy to share. Check the post for details.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Yeah, I picked up the Plaza on Orbitz.com They were unable to accomodate my wifes disability, so they were forced to put up the money for us to stay at the new hotel..Ramada if I recall...next door. We have to get used to lesser wheelchair accomodations down here, I've noticed.
PS: My best friend is in LA at Fuller. Close to your old place, perhaps. And sorry I instigated the negative rate.

I'm interested to know more about your impressions of NC vs. SC, besides for the tax and cost of living stuff.

Wolf in Sheeps clothing
I have an interesting story.
We were down here for maybe a month, when driving down providence rd. in Waxhaw, with NY plates still. We were doing the speed limit (or maybe 5-10 mph over) when coming out of the shopping center (where the Waxhaw family doctors office is) this 20 something, blond, beautiful girl driving a blue pickup truck rolled down her window (maybe it was open) stuck out her middle finger and proceeded to follow our car with her finger as we crossed her path. Needless to say this was not the your #1 sign! My mouth just hung open as did my wifes. My daughters just asked what that lady was doing! (that was fun explaining!) Oh well, guess this Yankee, must have done this a dozen times in NY, just never expected it from a Southern Belle!
Luckily we had our NC plates, so my wife made me go home and change them right away! Never had a problem since.
Funny thing is, we swear we know her now and goes to the same horse boarding place we go too!

Keith, that is sad and funny all at the same time. There really is no excuse for such crass behavior - and in front of children especially! All I can say is there are uncouth people everywhere and we all seem to eventually run into one of them. I hope now that you'd have your turn it will never happen again

No need to feel bad in regard to the negative rep that was left for me...I'm truly not bothered by it. I just find it ironic that you and I seem to be talking with each other and doing just find in my opinion...versus the person that had a one way conversation with themselves, made an assumption of what kind of person I was/am and then left a negative comment for me (oh, well...their loss)
Anywho...you are correct in your observation regarding handicap/wheelchair accomodations...and stating the problem that you and your wife have had here (my Dad is handicap too)..yet it has given me a couple of ideas that I am going to pursue.
As far as CA...we were located about 20 minutes from the city of L.A. (add commuter traffic...9 hours.... yeah I'm kidding. About the same distance for Fullerton.
Take care!
