Two stores is not going to change any market shares.... They will need to step it up to make a difference. Please note that HT goes head to head with publix in Charleston and Hilton Head and they do very well down there.... Check the grocery share of the market. Atlanta was right for a new competitor in the 90's. You had the market leader, Kroger, who offered poor customer service, high prices, dumpy stores and limited selections. Publix was new and exciting and filled the need. They also entered ATL with an aggressive store opening schedule. Things were different, publix offered something that Kroger, a n p, Bruno's did not offer.
IMO, HT and Publix compete on many of the same levels. If Publix crosses the state line, the battle would be on, but they would need to make a huge statement by opening more than two stores at a time...

Does anyone think that will ever happen? I sure hope so....

What could we do to get this to happen?? I'm tired of just hoping it will happen some day!

Would you, or any other Publix customers, know if they will send their weekly ad to all of York County?
I currently get weekly ads in the mail from Food Lion and Bi-Lo.

I'd like to get the Publix ad too.

Maybe they have weekly e-mails too, with ZVR type discounts that go on a Publix card.
Bi-Lo and HT have those, and manufacturers coupons can be used on top of the electronic coupons.

Here in Greenville, SC, the Publix ads come in the Wednesday and Sunday newspaper. I don't get them in the mail. And Publix does not have a MVP or VIC type card. You automatically get the sale price.

Wow, what a concept, not having to scan some stupid tracking card or give your phone number to get the advertised discount.

Actually a VIV card (Harris Teeter) and Bi-Lo card helps save money.
HT has over 25 ZVR electronic coupons that I can choose from, and they will load onto my VIC card.
They expire at some point, and new ones will be there to choose from.
If a box of GM cereal is on sale for 2 for $5.00 and there is a 50 cent ZVR, and I have a 50 cent manufacturer's coupon, then I get that box of cereal for $1.00.
Food Lion has a card too.
HT VIC customers get weekend specials on lots of items each week. They arrive in an e-mail.

If you fall into the group of persons who do not use coupons, then the whole concept of a card, electronic coupons, etc. do not work well.

Store #1419 Publix on Gold Hill, Fort Mill, SC and Store #1412 Cross Creek Publix, Indian Land, SC will both be opening in the end of October.

Sunday I rode by the Publix location on Gold Hill Road, for the first time since ground was broken.
They have alot of work left to do, to get an October opening, if the inside of the building looks like the outside.

I passed the old Food Lion location on the way to the new Harris Teeter.
That building appeared to be still vacant.

I drive by it almost every day, and they have landscaping up now. I wish they would have put more trees in the parking lot, down here I like to park in a shady spot during the summer!

They have poached a lot of HT employees, so the staffing isn't a problem at the moment. They send them down to Columbia or Atlanta to train in the stores so they are fully trained on opening day. I heard they are looking for people with at least one year's experience, which shouldn't be a problem with all the stores in the area. They definitely pay better than HT, from what I have heard.

Words can't express how stupid it is for HT to buy out Lowe's Foods to put a second store in a tiny town that doesn't really justify it, only to have it open FEWER hours than the previous Lowe's. If you're going to jam another store in an overserved market, at least offer something new.

I can't say I'm surprised by the unimaginative behemoth, but I am disappointed.
