There's a "GT" program (Gifted/Talented) at Crowders Creek. There are a lot of opportunities for special needs kids as well as for those who are ready for more challenging studies. I'd recommend visiting the schools and talking with the principals. Also, check the report cards for the schools:

PM me if you would like more information and I can see what I can find out for ya.

Freightliner will be located on 300 acres on HWY 274 across from the Windswept Cove subdivision. Their temporary location (2-3 years while the new facility is built) will be located at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill.

Let me know if anyone has leads on clerical positions at Freightliner. My fiance wouldn't mind working there and it would be close to us. Thanks.

For those who continue to be confused as to Fort Mill School District's ability to appropriately educate students with disabilities, I can personally attest to its ineffectiveness. Whether its providing adequate special education supports and services or ensuring appropriate education in the least restrictive environment, Fort Mill school district gets an F. My child who has special needs is no longer attending Fort Mill schools because of this.
As for students who may be considered "over achievers" and "gifted" , the education they receive is average at best. I can personally attest to this for I have other children who have attended Fort Mill schools who were considered in these categories. Fort Mill schools rank at the top of South Carolina schools, however South Carolina schools rank at the very bottom nationally. I would strongly suggest reputable/accredited private schools for your children if you are moving to South Carolina.

As a parent of 2 children in GT programs in Fort Mill, I would be interested in knowing why you feel that the education they receive is "average at best". Did your children actually avail of the program, or were they considered but you turned it down? If your children are/were in the regular program, why do you feel that there is no added value to their being in GT? My children came from advanced programs in CT and we feel that the FM program is better than what we left. Would you please expound?

There are several aspects concerning "gifted" programs for which I base my reasons for believing that Fort Mill school District schools do not offer what one would expect of gifted programs. Throughout the years, my children's GT teachers did not respond to my repeated attempts to ask questions regarding the program. I believe that teachers should be enthusiastic about their profession. Secondly, I had to suppliment their learning in the early grades (now they do that on their own) because it was not challenging enough. Finally, and this was the real tipper, however seemingly unbelievable, my gifted child's classwork from their GT class that was brought home was an exact duplicate of my special needs, cognitively impaired child's classwork for the same grade!

To be near the Freightliner corporate headquarters, and in the Clover school district, you might want to consider neighborhoods such as Bethelfields, Windswept Cove, The Landing, Autumn Cove. Those neighborhoods are full of relo's - - folks who have moved from all over the country. There are neighborhood pools, lots of kids, and you'll be able to make friends quickly. I know of several "Mom's" groups/playgroups.
Tega Cay & Baxter are also wonderful places for families, and conveniently located to Freightliner's temporary offices. Once the new facility is completed, though, you'll find it more convenient to be on the Lake Wylie/Clover side of the lake.
Clover schools are excellent - - have a strong reputation, as do Fort Mill schools. My kids started school in Fort Mill, then we moved to the Clover side, and love it. Let me know if I can provide any add'l info!

This is similar to the program that I think you guys call TAG. We have also been attracted to either Fort Mill or Tega Cay, but now I am having my doubts?? Man, this is all to much stress!! HELP!!!!!!

Hi Tom and Lynnette,
There is a chance that I might also be affected by the relocation of Daimler, but not immediately - though that could change rapidly. My daughter is in the Vancouver S.D. in a Life Skills class, due to severe epilepsy and resulting developmental delays. I am looking into Fort Mill or Rock Hill and have contacted some individuals in the SC Department of Education. If I get any responses, I will let you know!

Schools in Fort Mill
Good luck getting a response from the SC DOE. You will have an unbelievable difficult time getting the appropriate services for your child in any Fort Mill or Rock Hill School District. All districts in SC are notorious for not providing appropriate related services. You will need a good lawyer to get the SC educational system to do anything for your child. They just don't know and/or care how to educate special needs children.
