Looking into moving to Greenville from FL. Not retired. Kids in college soon. Hear wonderful things about activities in Greenville, mountains, active folks and NC within an hour. Another member posted to look into Rock Hill. Have not visited Charlotte but not looking to move into a big city but not rural either. All input is welcome.
Thanks!
Charlotte is not a big city, although there's always something to do (provided that you live in fairly close proximity to Downtown CLT).
It was once said, and I agree, that "Charlotte is a City for people who don't like the City." The pace isn't maddening here, nor is it slow; the City itself is beautiful, and there's a great park system here to be appreciated (and I am not a person who previously appreciated parks).
We're a short 3-3.5 hr drive from some of the most beautiful beaches, and majestic mountains.
Right outside of CLT is the best the South has to offer (kindness of folks, and great Southern cooking); inside of CLT, you can find Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian, etc.
The only thing not in CLT, is a good Italian bakery.

After reading several of your prior posts, and taking that all into consideration I'd say stick with your original search of areas around Greenville and Greer.
We just moved to Fort Mill after 8 years in Greenville so I've got a bit of insight here. I love being near Charlotte, and I like Fort Mill much better than Greenville. Yes, Greenville has a cute downtown and some shopping. There is SO much more to do up here and in all honesty, I like the people better up here. You will find that Greenville has a VERY strong religious population and one of the first things you will be asked is: "Where do you go to church?" There are a lot of locals there and not as much of a mix of people from all over the country (I'm originally from the west coast).
One thing to remember about Greenville is that's it's pretty small. I got to the point where I really wanted to be able to go to Target, Costco, Publix, etc looking really ugly if needed and not run into someone I knew. For me, it's too small when I'm hiding in Hobby Lobby because I'm still in my gym clothes and I've run into the 3rd person I know .
If you are looking for more options for things to do, I would seriously consider the outskirts of Charlotte like Fort Mill, Marvin, Waxhaw, Weddington, etc. All have excellent schools and great communities. Just my two cents! Best of luck to you and your family.

What areas in Greenville can you compare to Fort Mill? When you say there is more to do there, are you speaking directly about in CLT or the outskirts that you mentioned? I tried to send you a PM but your settings are private. Feel free to send me a message.

I prefer across the border in South Carolina and still reap the benefits of Charlotte. I worked in Charlotte for years and the commute wasn't too bad unless someone had a wreck on Hwy 49, it was a two lane road then.
Charlotte has always been a place we could dance the night away, have dinner in fine restaurants, shop 'til we drop, see any kind of doctor/specialist we needed, attend concerts with famous rock groups, country music stars, the symphony and then head back across the border to our quiet and peaceful SC.

Sent you a PM. Great to see you have experience in both places!

Do you know of the areas SamanthaBaker listed? I was pleased to see the comments and have another choice beside Greenville. She mentioned several communities. What is your feeling? Thanks. Definitely will visit next summer or fall. Have never been to Charlotte but hear great things!
