I get my taxes done for free at the York County Library...they are all CPA's who are voulnteers and are very thorough. They just won't do it if you own rental property or a small business.

I work in NC and live in SC. We file both NC and SC tax returns but the income tax withheld by my employer are NC taxes. We have healthcare with my employer in NC but as long as the dr is in network it is okay.

We moved from Ponte Vedra florida and like you were used to high insurance rates on everything because of hurricanes. We lived about 1 mile from the ocean...between the ocean and intercoastal. We found that all the insurance was less expensive in Fort Mill (no flood insurance needed!) and taxes have worked out well for us. Filing with the tax credit for NC paid taxes for SC seems to cover everything. The only surprise we had was the automobile taxes. We had a MOST pleasant surprise with property taxes

Never thought about it til now, but this thread and subsequent posts just got me to wonderin'... (if I understand correctly re how it works) it would be interesting to know just how much coin the state of NC sees/reaps in state income tax from residents of the state of SC, esp. York and Lancaster counties. Wow.

I'm sure it's a lot. Luckily, there is no commuter tax or tolls YET.

yes they do but sc will only give a tax credit on a percentage of what you paid to another state.

What is your context here? If 100% of your income is from NC then 100% of your taxes is to NC.

When I worked in Charlotte the only taxes I wound up paying to SC were for income from SC [e.g., interest, accts] and the use tax [internet purchases] - Now they *expect* you to pay sales tax on purchases made across the border and on which NC taxes were already paid - but how the heck to you track that - I don't save all those receipts.
