Fort Mill - Jones Branch Subdivision
Hi again everyone!
Although I am still considering Tega Cay very seriously - I am weighing all my options. I am curious about this Jones Branch subdivision in Fort Mill - if anyone knows anything about it, lives in it, etc.
PROS AND CONS would be great - as there are both to everything.
I believe LIBERTY HOMES are the builders there - if anyone knows anything about them as well please post.
I've read elsewhere that the subdivision is ridiculously close to I-77. Any thoughts on the overall area?

Very close to I-77. Some of the homes are 200 ft or so feet from the interstate.
Down the road from Riverview and Fort Mill High. Close to Sutton Place and Baxter.
Good Luck.

thanks!
thanks..yeah that's what i heard as far as closeness to the highway. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm going to look at them on Tuesday to see what's up. Can't hurt I suppose.

It's a very bad thing when it's so close you can see and hear the vehicles like they're driving in your backyard. To me it seems like a very low quality neighborhood.

that does sound pretty bad. I really wanted to live in Tega Cay but for some reason living that close to the nuclear power plant bothered me. Fort Mill is just a tad further away (and further from the lake too). I guess I'll just have to look around.

There is no comparison between Jones Branch and Tega Cay. For example the price point. if you see a home for $150K in Tega Cay let me know. There are nuclear plants everywhere in the USA and have been there for a long time. If anything were to happen, God forbid, we all would be affected in our area. These days they have better security and diesel back up generators that should prevent accidents. The coal power plants are enviromentally much worse IMO. Windmills are the safest, but would be insufficient to serve all of greater Charlotte and they are not nice to look at.

I live on what is considered ( I think) the far side of Fort Mill in a development off Doby's Bridge Rd. Lot's of my neighbors have boats and I go Kayaking with one on Lake Wylie the drive is only about 10 minutes.

I am not a fan on nuclear power plants either, so I did a little research. Vermont is the ''Green State" and here is why:
Vermont: On August 18, 2006, the new Vermont Nuclear Profile was posted. The Green Mountain State is a “green” (environmentalist) State, with the cleanest air in the Nation. The emissions-free power from its lone nuclear plant has to be considered a significant factor
Here are all states listed with Nuclear Power plants: U.S. Nuclear Reactors

Yep i agree the coal combustion plants are much worse. I know there's absolutely no comparison between Jones Branch and Tega Cay - Tega Cay is so much nicer of an area overall. I was just curious about that particular subdivision since it's new and no one seemed to mention here on the boards. Apparently, it's not very attractive to people cause no one talks about it! LOL
I'm going to look at it for the sake of looking at it.
I know that there are nuclear power plants everywhere - but according to mapquest and mapblast the house in tega cay we were looking at is only about 13 miles from the plant and something further east in fort mill is about 20 miles. I am not sure if that's accurate because you can't always trust those map things... but that's what it said.
My concern with power plants was never something like accidents or attacks or whatever. It was always low-dose radiation exposure over time. Something slow and kind of undetectable - and how it could possibly affect a person's health. I'm not so much worried that I'll grow a third arm - although with a toddler it might be useful!
Also, the drinking water. I've read recently that there was a leak of tritium from the plant that they say never reached the water. After the whole PG&E I don't trust these people anyway.
I also found an article about a study done in Germany stating that children who live 3 miles or closer to a nuclear power plant are 60% more like to get cancer. However, it was a study done over numerous years where only 77 cases were found - and they couldn't truly CONCLUDE that the plant was the cause if it.
Obviously, there are TONS of people who live in the area and are just fine. I'm also not naive enough to believe that anywhere you go in the U.S.A. you're likely to be near something potentially toxic. Again, I just thought - MAYBE - being a little further away would be better. I'm still not certain but I'm weighing the options.
Before I found out about all the coal and nuclear power plants in the Carolinas (because although they are everywhere - apparently the Carolinas does have an abundant supply) - I was happy with every aspect of moving here. People are great, food is better, I think the overall landscape - schools are better than Tennessee especially in Fort Mill...etc. It's just that one thing that kinda bothered me. Not to the point where I wanted to throw myself off a cliff - but enough for me to consider numerous areas (before I had narrowed it down to solely Tega Cay) in order to try and be furthest from these things without losing the good schools, low crime, etc.
Tega Cay can be pricey but we found 8 homes - all of which we looked at in our mediocre price range of up to 215k. We weren't lucky enough to sell a home in the Northeast where we would have banked 50k, 75k or 100k+.
We sold a crappy little house in middle tennessee where appreciation value stinks. That being said, we had a limited number of options based on our down payment.
If I could chose without any questions in my mind I would choose Tega Cay. However, I still have time to look at other things and make the best decision I can.....

I live in Tega Cay and I am very happy here! When you come here don't forget to see Windjammer Park's beaches in Tega Cay. I spend most of the summer evenings there and watch the awesome sunset. I like the fact that we have those amenities at no cost. If you like to join the swim or tennis club you pay a membership. But other than that, there are no association fees. Good luck on your home search!
