Hello!
My husband and I are planning to retire in SC because of the low taxes and the proximity to grandchildren; however, we have heard that the best medical care and hospitals are in NC. We recently heard that there can be issues with using NC care when in SC. My daughter's insurance company told her to always pursue care in SC first and to use NC when the care isn't available in SC. Since we are expecting to live in SC into our old age, we figured that we should find out more about this. Has anyone else had an issues?
Thank you!!

We lived in Indian Land, SC for 7 years (in a Sun City community just south of Charlotte NC) and never had a problem. We had both United Healthcare and BC/BS of South Carolina and all of our doctors were in NC. Never once did we have a problem getting coverage for our health. In fact I had a major surgery (hip replacement) in a NC hospital with NC doctors and it was all covered except for the plan deductible.

The fact that you are retiring means you will be on Medicare and that makes it even easier. Any doc that accepts Medicare
will cover you no matter where you live.

No issues. Live in SC and our family uses all Charlotte doctors. My husband and I both had major, unexpected surgery and used Charlotte hospitals. We have blue cross/shield.

We have had zero issues living in South Carolina and receiving medical care in NC. All of my family's doctors, except for dermatologists, are in NC. We've had several insurances since we moved here Aetna, Cigna and now BC/BS NC.

Believe you should check with your insurance carrier, depending on what kind of plan you are on, you may or may not be able to use doctors in both states. I personally never had the issue, while working in Charlotte, living in Ft Mill and having insurance through my employer. When I retired young I had to buy ACA (Obama Care) and that can get tricky living in one state and going to doctors in another state....but I did check with BCBS on my SC policy and they did cover everything in Charlotte, doctors and hospitals both.

We have been in SC for 10 years and exclusively use CHS (which is in Charlotte, NC) for our medical care.

Never had an issue going cross-state with Cigna or when I was with Blue Cross. But I would check with your insurance carrier...maybe you have a really bad plan

My husband will be on Medicare when we retire and move out there. He hasn't chosen a policy yet. Thanks for sharing that you haven't had any problems!!
