We live in Fort Mill, and on some mornings when we go outside, I swear I stepped in a pile of dung. The whole area just plain stinks. When we first moved in, it was the wet clay smell.
My neighbor told me there was a sewage treatment plant in Pineville and that if the wind was blowing this way, that might be what we are smelling. Do you think this could be true? Anyone else smell it?
Yes, it's the McMullen Creek wastewater treatment plant. It's not too far from Carolina Place Mall, but I'm far enough away that I don't smell it. There is also a place near there that makes mulch and that's not too pleasant either.
Seriously doubt it is the Pineville treatment plant. Most likely, it's the Bowater Paper Mill which is on the Catawba River just south of Rock Hill. It doesn't smell near as bad as it use to, but ocasionally they have equipment problems and atmospheric conditions can bring the "smell of money" into the FM area.

Okay I am curious...where do you happen to live in Fort Mill?
It smells like potato chips to me. Could it be the cracker factory off of south blvd?
You wouldn't smell the Lance plant in Fort Mill. It barely smells when you're right near there on South Blvd.
