You can challenge it with kelly blue book or edmunds, if its not "too much" below what the county said. There is also a high odometer discount..you have to pick one or the other

you can negotiate the value and still get the high mileage discount. They over valued my care by $14k! I had to get a retail appraisal from the dealer but it was worth it for the savings.
I guess the lesson that the County is trying to teach us is that we all need to drive around 10 year sh**boxes as the tax assessment on those are nickels and dimes.
Other lessons
1) earn less money to lower income tax
2) live in an apt to lower property tax
3) order less food to lower tip at restaurant
In New York I didn't have to pay property taxes on my vehicles.
(But real estate property taxes are 10 times higher...)
And this is why I don't complaint about car taxes down here.
I'd much rather pay $1600 in house taxes and $300 in car taxes versus $0 in car taxes and $11,000 in house taxes. Heck, I'd rather pay $5000 in house taxes and $2000 in car taxes versus $0 in car taxes and $11,000 in house taxes. I still end up paying less AND get twice the house I could get in NYC.

Please.
In 2008 I purchased a car in NY, and license plates cost me $220 (!) I wonder what they cost now. That's the way they operate in NY.
When I retitled my car in SC, I laughed at the cost of fees. License was what...$25 or $28? Plates ran around $25? (Don't forget that NY gasoline taxes are fourth highest in the US)
Like you, I'll gladly pay property tax on my vehicles .
That seems very unreasonable. My current vehicle was nearly $40,000 and I didn't have to pay anything remotely close to that.
