Default leased car registration

I am renting appartment in balantyne , NC but my job is in lancaster , SC. I plan to rent the appartment for six months and then buy house in somewhere in fort mill, SC. Since I am moving from NY, I need to get my leased car registered at DMV. But i am confused which DMV should I go. Will I have to register my car at NC DMV just for six month or just go to SC DMV because I will be moving there eventually.I am confused..I also want to know the procedure or paper work for registeration of leased vehcile.

I don't know about which state you should register in, that's a unique question.

I can tell you that to register a leased vehicle in SC requires extra planning. You need to contact the lessor of the vehicle to have them fax a statement to the DMV allowing the vehicle to be registered. I can't remember the name of the form and I couldn't find any info about it on the web site.

All the same, here's a link to the SC DMV and the form for registering a leased vehicle. There's a 1-800 number you can call (sorry, couldn't find it) for general questions or you can leave a message with DMV office and they'll call you back.

Hi!

My guess is that you have to register in NC because you live there and then do it again when you move to SC... unless you try to get by not doing anything until you move again. I know there are rules in SC about how long you can wait but I don't know about NC. There must be a website for the NC DMV like there is for SC DMV which could answer that question.

Whatever you do, you will have some difficulty registering your leased vehicle in SC. I have a post on this you might look for that describes the problems I had and how to simplify the process.

Basically, my advice is to not go to the Heckle Rd DMV but try the Newport DMV (Hands Mill Rd). Both are in York County which is where Fort Mill is.

You will need a power of attorney from your lease company (which is easy to get) and ask for a "title in suspense" because you probably can not get the original title from your lease company. With the title in suspense, you get to register the car and they deal with the lease company to change the title.

After four months of aggravation from the Heckle Road office, I was in and out of the Hands Mill office in 10 minutes!

Good luck!

Double whether you will be living in the Lancaster Co. portion of Fort Mill or the York Co. portion.
