Several medical service providers in recent years. All offered a substantial discount for same day pay, cash pay and one had a discount of over 50%. The rest in the 30-35% range. What about the local hospitals, emergency room doctors, etc.? Thanks.

I don't see any of the "big three" in our area offering discounts for cash or same-day. But perhaps I'll be proven wrong!

A friend and his wife had a bill near $1800 from RH Radiology and over a period of time it all was discounted.
I'm not sure how that radiology bill disappeared.

Emergency rooms see people every day who have no job, and no insurance. So I'd guess they should or could offer some sort of reduction. Or maybe they prefer $25 a month for a long, long time.

Usually you can negotiate medical bills by asking if they offer a discount if paid in full. I have a high deductible HSA and do this each time. Also you can set up a payment plan and there are usually no fees.

They wouldn't budge with me either after a needed surgery left me with five figures to pay back. They had me pay ~$150 a month for several years until finally my HSA was more than my outstanding balance, and then I used that to pay off the balance.

Anyone heard of Avectus which is mentioned in the article for CMS.

Carolinas HealthCare System seeks to identify those responsible for paying the medical bills of its patients so we can request payment from the appropriate payer for the services we provide.
The responsible party could be the patient's health insurer or auto insurance company, the auto insurance company of the other drivers or an attorney who is negotiating a settlement.

In 2015, Carolinas HealthCare System absorbed nearly $20 million in bad debt from unpaid medical bills related to auto accidents.

"While we provide care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, we believe those with insurance coverage or the proceeds from a settlement should pay for the medical care they received as a result of that accident."

Indiana legislators passed a law requiring hospitals to bill a patient's accepted health insurance.

Avectus Healthcare Solutions coordinates third party insurance on behalf of 300+ hospitals across the US. They collect details and third party insurance information on behalf of the provider. Once they have the insurance info they call your insurance and make sure your bill is sent to the responsible party.

Their website says that they're "coordinating third party for hospitals and trauma centers throughout the Southeastern region of the United States.

They work on behalf of the hospitals, insurance adjusters, and grant reductions on ER bills if needed.

How did they force you to pay 150 a month. By threatening to contact credit bureaus?

No, they let me arrange a payment plan so that rather than paying off the entire balance (or going into collections because I couldn't pay the balance), I could make monthly payments.
