Winters in Fort Mill compared to up North?
Hi, I currently live in PA (waiting for house to sell). One of the many reasons we are moving to Fort Mill is the weather. I realize it was a mild winter (in PA anyway), how do prior Northerners feel the winter weather compares? Was it quite a bit warmer? Did Spring arrive earlier/did Fall last longer? Also, if anyone has lived through a Summer (after living up North) were the summers brutal in comparison? I used to live in Fort Lauderdale, FL (where you can't spend much time outside in the summer or your head feels like its going to explode)and we are now hoping to find a happy medium.
Many thanks! Gayle

I lived in Detoit and Buffalo and will take Charlotte area weather any day. It really isn't too much warmer here, but it is rare to get a break from the heat. Sometimes up north in July you get a few cool days and nights are cool, but that is rare around here. Spring starts in March (usually), April is pollen month, may is usually in the 80s and July thru August (sometimes September is hot). It doesn't get "cold" (meaning 50s for highs) until December.
The snow and cold weather require so much effort to deal with. You don't have to shovel warm weather, buy more clothes for it, etc.

Okay this so wierd. I just moved to FM from PA and also used to live in Fort Lauderdale. I will take the weather here anytime. Less humid then FLA. This past summer there was one very hot stretch but I made out well cause I was visiting PA and did not mind the rest of the summer. I think the nice seasons ( fall and winter) last longer and are more mild here then in PA. The trees get blooms earlier, you put on shorts sooner and such.

Hi!
We moved last August to Fort Mill from western NY and I have also lived in Florida.
Mid August was extremely hot in Fort Mill (over 100 degrees for a number of days), BUT it was never as miserable as the humidity in Florida.
As for the winter, it was amazing here. Although we can get some snow and ice here, we had none this winter. Spring was here by the beginning of March!
All in all, I believe this area is your happy medium!!
Good luck!

Hi there- if I remember correctly you are from my area of PA (Chester Cty), so I can relate to the winters there! As the previous posters have said, I think you will find the weather here much more mild in the winter months. I always hated Feb/Mar. in West Chester because it was always cold and dreary, here we have had some really beautiful weather the last couple of months (except for last weekend- brrr!). The dull winter months definitely go faster and you have sunny warm days mixed in throughout. I think we had a few 70 degree days in December!
We moved down in the middle of the heat wave last August, wasn't the best weather with 100 degree days but with the pools it wasn't a huge deal.
Good Luck with the move!

Thank you everyone for your helpful replies! I am hoping now that its April, that the weather in PA will improve and people will start looking at houses again and buy ours! I wish I was in Fort Mill today cause the weather here in PA is miserable, gray and wet. It can get depressing. I am glad to hear it is not as humid as Florida! Hopefully the bugs won't be as big and as many as there as well - as that is one good thing in PA (and I've gotten spoiled) is the lack of bugs here. Oh, and I'm looking forward to the friendlier people in Fort Mill and all the things to do! People in PA are cordial and polite (at work), just not so friendly as to want to hang out on the weekends and have a BBQ, you know what I mean? We never have anyone over! Thanks again! Gayle

I was worried about the bugs in Fort Mill too! After living in Florida with the bugs there, I got spoiled with the relative lack of bugs in NY. Actually, other than a few crickets, we have seen nothing unusual here in Fort Mill.

Thanks movingdown - I'm glad to hear that. I would hate to have bugs as big as busses again! I think if you're on the water there's more bugs though. We shall see. Pray my house sells (really) soon!

justgayle, they do grow the bugs big here! And then there are the black widow spiders that we have seen in our garage and back deck. Snakes? Yikes, don't even mention them.

justgayle -- I'm in the same boat. I'm sitting here in Northeast PA with my house on the market, waiting for a buyer so we can relocate to Charlotte to this summer. My husband's company moved him there last July and I stayed in PA because we have two kids finishing up high school this year. We put the house on the market the end of Feb. and we've had only one showing. My husband's been commuting back and forth every weekend (flying) and it's been really tough on him. We're hoping a buyer comes along real soon! And you're right, the weather has been depressing! My husband doesn't help the situation when he calls me from Charlotte and says "oh, it's 70 here today!"
