Was this today? Fort Mill is huge...so it depends (and it could even be Indian Land which has a FM address). Luckily you will be opposite traffic though. I personally would allow an hour just to be safe. It took 50 minutes to get to my dad's old house near UNCC to my house in Ft Mill.
Take Tryon instead of 85-77 to uptown. Because you WILL hit traffic on I77 coming into town from the north. Near the rail bridge coming into uptown, bear right onto Church St. and take it about 12 blocks until you come to I-277 (on your right b/w the Charlotte Observer building and BofA Stadium)....Take I-277 one exit to I77 south. It should be clear of traffic when you get on there. And, yeah, give yourself an hour just in case.
I say take 485 and skip downtown altogether. In the morning all the traffic on the south side is heading towards 77. I commute from Indian Land to Matthews (get on 485 at the Hwy 521 intersection and go up to Independence Blvd) and never have any problems with traffic unless there is a wreck.
Well, 485 will add a bunch of miles to your trip and it clogs up when you get to South Charlotte. With the Tryon route, it might be a little slow going down Church Street, but once you get past that it's smooth sailing barring an accident.
jm, the poster will be going the opposite way you go. I think you miss most of the traffic around the Providence Road/Rea Road area. It can be a parking lot in the mornings.
