Driving from NJ to Fort Mill with Dog
Hello,
I am moving down to Fort Mill on June 13. I plan to drive about 5 hrs and then stay overnight somewhere along the way. I have a small dog (12 lbs) and I have a website that lists all dog-friendly hotels but since I will be stopping whenever I feel the need, won't know exactly what hotel I will end up at. Can anyone give suggestions as to what I can do about this? I don't want to end up driving from hotel to hotel asking if they take pets? Any advice would be so appreciated. Thanks, Michelle Oh, I will be going Rt. 78 to Rt. 81 to Rt. 77 but assume I will probably end up somewhere along Rt. 81 when I plan to stop.

Most of 81 in Virginia is good in terms of stops. I'm originally from there.
I can suggest a couple of places for you, and you can DM me if you need to. Harrisonburg is a beautiful city, and is a good place to stop, as are Roanoke and Wytheville. Wytheville is where 77 begins.
Enjoy your trip!

I would calculate approximately where I'd be after driving 5 - 6 hours, do a search on hotels in that vicinity and call a number of them prior to the trip to see which ones allow small pets so you'll know what options you have prior to getting on the road. I'm not sure where in NJ you're coming from, but when we would drive down from central NY, 5 hours would put us around Carlisle / Chambersburg, PA. For you that could possibly be the Harrisonburg, VA area.

I too had a two day trip to get here last summer. My pet ended up being put down two months before we moved, but I had already looked into hotels that would accept pets. I had made a specific plan where i wanted to stop, but I suggest that you pick two to three possibilities at different points and make a reservation at each. Make sure they each have a policy that allows cancellation up until a specific time... most seem to be 6 PM. That way you can have a set reservation at a place that accepts pets and cancel the others.
I hope your pet travels well. Mine was a cat who yelled the whole way to the vet. I was not looking forward to a two day trip with him, but would have done it if we could have had him with us.
Our trip was from western NY, so I can't give you any specific suggestions for a hotel. I remember looking up hotels that accept pets on the internet and got a list that way.
Good luck!

"AAA" has a book that lists pet friendly hotels. It breaks it down by each state. I used one when we traveled...it was helpful. You can pick it up at any AAA office or even at Barnes and Noble bookstores.

Check out petswelcome.com. We stayed at a best western in Harrisonburg, VA with a 55 lb dog. Hotel was decent and right by a university. Most places off 81 will be ok. Have a great trip!

My husband and I always travel with our dog and I usually go to Hotels.com and do a search by amenities. You can choose "pet friendly" and it will list only those that accept pets. Its nice because you can read the comments that people have left after their stay and it gives a full range of hotels depending on what star rating you are looking for. We have found La Quintas are pretty good for the money that you pay. I would read the comments though, they say alot about how the hotel really is. Hope that helps! Have a good trip and welcome to the Carolinas!!
