I think you either love it or don't -- we did not like the construction of many of the homes in tega cay and the haphazard approach to the way the community was built.
Yes you are very close to a nuke plant with one of thinniest containment domes in the country, an old ice-cooled reacter which is buring experimental mixed oxide fuel. Make sure to get your issue of potassium iodide tables [which they have not done, to the best of my knowledge, since 9-11]

If you live in Tega Cay and aren't retired then the commute to Charlotte can be a bear.

I agree with you grannynancy...that folks will either love Tega Cay or they won't (thank goodness we all have different tastes).
I also understand everyone has their own opinions in regard to nuclear plants and I often times mention this to folks that may be thinking about residing in the area. Course since I am a resident of Tega Cay I guess it is clear what decision we made after doing much research. But I'm curious if you have such concern about the Catawba Nuclear Plant...(you've made mention on other posts that you live in Whitegrove)...why did you move within the 10 mile zone of the plant?

Oh and the Potassium Iodide Tablets are available at the York County Health Dept. if you are in need:
SC.GOV - New KI tablets now available for 13 South Carolina counties
Potassium Iodide (KI) - Duke Energy

You know this can be really confusing to folks that are not familiar with the area.
For example I have left my home in TC at 8am (commuter traffic) and have made it to uptown area (77/277) within 18 minutes (but I don't commute to uptown Charlotte on a regular basis so I figured I just got lucky). Yet I know several folks that do head to uptown for banking jobs and it takes them apx. 30 mins.
Also there are many businesses in S/W Charlotte (we are apx. 3 miles from the NC/SC stateline-S/W Charlotte). My D/H works in Charlotte (S/W) and it is 8 miles from our front door to his work (his commute is a little over 10 minutes, on surface roads)

At the time, it was a matter of weighing the risks and getting and then keeping our kids in Fort Mill Schools because that was the best option at the time. I had a job offer in Rock Hill that precipitated our move [we chose Rock Hill over Oak Ridge TN]
We moved here before the huge boom in growth [1993-Whitegrove later] and I feel that the evacuation plan has become more and more of a joke since then. Also terrorist concerns have risen and it is not lost on me that the Catawba plants are very close to a major airport [I have flown right over the cooling towers before] and have the thinner walls.
After we moved here we became aware of the thinner containment structure and actively fought the use of mixed oxide fuel in these reactors. MOX fuel was approved for these reactors; the article is old.

My next move will be much further away from a nuclear plant [existing or planned]

I have fallen in love w/ Tega Cay and if we decide to sell our home in S. CLT, we would want to relocate to TC.
As for the nuclear power plant . . . being close or far away is really not an issue, b/c if there is an accident, the danger would far exceed just the immediate area. It would affect several hundred miles. These plants here in NC are rigorously inspected and I, for one, do not worry about the safety of them at all. Statistically, we are all at a much higher risk of being killed in a car accident than as a result of an accident from a nuclear power plant, even if you live w/in feet of one.
I am so glad we have nuclear power in this region, especially w/ a global energy crisis becoming more and more a possibility.

Interesting information. Thank you. Could you please elaborate on the Potassium Iodide Tablets? Do people take these and/or have them readily available?
I do agree with anifani821, we can't live in fear of a potential accident occurring.

Not looking to change your mind (to each their own)...but like I said before I was just a tad curious, and found it interesting that after what you'd stated (and how you feel about living by a nuclear plant) that you yourself live in close proximity to Catawba (since 1993).
Heck I wish you the best in your upcoming move but if you are considering the Greenville area (which is a very nice area)...you do realize there is a plant up that way too...right?
