CouponJack, you have landed on one of the Great Debates of all time. The “Which way is the best way to Myrtle” debate has long been discussed now for generations in the Carolinas and surrounding region of the country.
Everyone has their favorite way. Sometimes the routes differ with just minor variations, but each person will swear theirs is the best. The routes pretty much all take about the same amount of time, which is, yes, 3 hours or so. Even the mapping tools now available on the net rarely agree on the exact same route.
With a starting point of Pageland, the route you described would be fine. There are some variations in the recommended routes near Florence, but again, it’s usually a “six-of-one/half a dozen of another” sort of thing. Some routes avoid 95.
Along the way: Heading from that direction to Myrtle, you travel through the Pee Dee region of SC, an area with a strong agricultural element, especially tobacco and cotton. If you are into agri-tourism, that is one cool area for it. There are some cool SC-related travel books out there that describe cool sights and road trips through the Pee Dee region, if you are interested in stopping to hang out along the way. York County libraries carry some, as do local bookstores here. At the bookstores, look in both the Travel section and the Regional section.
With a starting point further west of Pageland, say, Lancaster or Rock Hill: When one’s starting point is further west of Pageland, people often use one of a couple of choices of routes that will drop them down to I-20 and then head east until eventually picking up the latter portions of the route you describe above.
Just like any coastal town of this sort, Friday afternoon and evening are crowded heading towards the beach (especially near the beach) and same holds true for Sunday, traveling in the reverse direction.
I was born and raised in a state north of here and, after a few years of going to the Eastern Shore of MD for family vacations, my family started heading to Myrtle. Then came the girlfriend getaways, and eventually I attended college just outside of Myrtle. Have been on just about every route there is in that area of the state at one time or another, especially years ago. We also used to do the SC Hwy 9 route, which brings you in at North Myrtle Beach.
The cool thing (to me) is that much is unchanged on those back roads, even after all these years.
Happy trails!
