Our son and his family moved to Fort Mill last year, and we are thinking of following. My question is about the quality of medical care available in the area as my husband is diabetic and has a variety of issues. Is it difficult to find specialists and good internists? Do they accept new patients? Is Charlotte the best place to find doctors or are there grooups in Fort MIll?
Thanks. We love the area.
There are groups in Fort Mill but it really depends on your insurance as to who they accept. Charlotte has an excellent reputation for doctors and specialists. The Main hospital for Charlotte (CMC-Main) is a Level 4 Trauma (highest available) and a teaching hospital so they are up to date in new technology.
You can find almost any kind of doctor you need in Rock Hill, Fort Mill, or Pineville. Charlotte has everything else that is very very specialized. Most doctors in Fort Mill are part of three major medical groups, Piedmont Medical, Carolinas Medical or Presbyterian. So you are in no way limited to one hospital just because you live in Fort Mill.
Personally, I'd choose doctors that have access to the CMC or Presbyterian systems. Piedmont Medical in Rock Hill is run by Tenet Health care right now, they are the only for profit hospital in the area and it shows, especially on weekends, when they have almost no one on duty.
Thanks for the information. I'm a little concerned because I will have insurance through Pomco - a company that self-insures school districts up here in NY - until Medicare takes over and I'm not sure that the doctors down there will accept it. Something to think about. We are still looking forward to coming down.

Please make solving this your first priority before you decide to move down. The posters are correct about the three hospitals and the medical groups.
We ran into the problem that NONE of the doctors associated with CMC (in Charlotte) who are in York County, SC (Fort Mill, Rock Hill, etc.) would accept my husband's insurance from out of town. It was a medicare advantage program and the word "advantage" was the problem. I realize you are not on a medicare supplemental plan yet, but I urge you to call some of the internists in the Fort Mill area and ask about your specific plan. Sometimes they have to see the card before they can answer. The internet can help you find the doctors and which medical group they are in. If I can help any more, let me know.
As far as the care here, I have been happy with my doctors and my husband is just switching to my internist since he now has different insurance.
I was kind of spoiled and had all my care through Cleveland Clinic. I tried Fort Mill doctors, and didn't feel comfortable. I made a decision to see my care in Charlotte...and saw a huge difference. Then again, everyone has different insurance, different needs and expectations.
I love Sandra McMahon who does practice in Fort Mill and Rock Hill. She is an internist and when she sees you, there is no one more important than you. It may take you a while to get your first appointment with her because she will require a full physical to take on a patient. She also spends time with her patients and sometimes you may wait past your appointment time, but I say it's worth it.
CMC - Fort Mill Medical Plaza will be opening their clinic this month at 704 Gold Hill Rd and includes:
Shiland Family Medicine - GP
Piedmont GYN/OB
Sanger Clinic - Heart Docs
Fort Mill Pediatric
And they will have Urgent Care available 7 days a week 8am - 8pm.
As someone has already stated if you have Medicare's Advantage Plan you will have a difficult time finding clinics, docs or hospitals that will accept that coverage.
Good luck in your search.
