Yes, Fort Mill is better. I cant afford to live there unless I get a tiny home like around 1200 sq. ft. and thats to small so I am going more toward Columbia but from what I heard FM is the first choice for many.

Well, I'm from that area of SC and would love to move back. If I were choosing, I would choose Fort Mill if schools are a concern. Rock Hill has some nice areas, but I would stay away from the side closest to Chester. Chester has gone through a lot of mills closing; it does have very affordable housing, though. You can buy a home in the historic district for well under $200,000. Lancaster, SC, is another option; it is really growing as well, as it is also close to Fort Mill and Charlotte (which is in NC). Lake Wylie is a good option if you have a little more money, say closer to $300,000 (and up), but it's a huge lake, so that's expected. Were I going to choose, I would probably choose Fort Mill or the northern part of Rock Hill.

As far as Rock Hill's school district, I can't answer from personal experience, but my guess would be how you're treated depends on what you expect. None of the schools in the South pays as much as you get elsewhere, but the people's friendliness makes up for that (at least in my opinion). You can get a lot of answers on the Carolina Living website if you want more information.

I believe India Hook Elementary is a new school. The website for the new India Hook school is http://www.rock-hill.k12.sc.us/schools/elem/ihes/; it shows the dates and times for parent informational meetings, which you might find helpful.

Good luck!

I live very close to where the new India Hook School is going to be built. Plus, the superintedent of Rock Hill Schools lives in my neighborhood. From what she has told me, Rock Hill has an excellent district. I've seen test scores...maybe not quite what Fort Mill has been they're getting closer. You might want to check our community out at mysunsetpoint.com. The neighborhood is built out, but there are nice homes for sale in the 200K range, plus you have a pool, boat storage and beach on Lake Wylie. The boat storage area is full now!! but we have a project on the books to expand it this fall.

Luke

RHarvin is on a distinguished road
I am new to Rock Hill by way of Charlotte NC. I moved to a condo off Mt Gallant July. I learned that my kids would attend a new elementary school India hook which was not completed at the time that I moved. I checked the website eagerly anticipating information about the school and staff at their new education dwelling. Periodically things were updated to keep me informed on the progress of the facility. I registered my 3rd grade twin daughters completing the paperwork given to me the first time advising that they would require bus transportation from school in the evening as I am a single parent and work full time in Ft Mill. I awaited notification about my children's teacher and bus only to not receive the information. It was about 2 weeks before school was due to begin that I called transportation to inquire about the bus they would be riding in the afternoon to get home. I was advised at that time that per the SC State law any child living within 1 and 1/2 miles from the school would not be provided transportation to and from school. Being a single parent that unfortunately can't be a stay at home mother was faced with an issue. I haven't been in the community for very long and I have only physically met one of my neighbors and had a sibling that would soon move about 8 houses down from me who also has a child that would be attending India Hook Elementary School. The great thing about this is her son is able to get off the bus and be trusted to stay home alone for a maximum of 45 minutes while my neighbor looks out for them all until his step father arrives around 3:45-4:00. Well to make a long story short the issue at hand now is I was advised that my eight year old daughter's would either have to be picked up or walk home. Anyone familiar with the area that India Hook Elementary School was built knows that not only is Twin Lakes a narrow, curvy road, there are no side walks or lights and is very dangerous. I was advised by the District 3 transportation office that the State of SC has requested that the children living in the Old Town Community walk home using a path which actually after going to view the path turns out to be a narrow trail of dirt through the woods and up a hill that leads in the back yard of a resident that I know nothing about. Not to mention in a zip code that has 76 Sex Offenders listed . What bothers me the most about this is a so call human being is the one that created this law and who is enforcing it by not allowing anyone local to do anything to help. Yes the school offers an after school program that for someone such as myself can not comfortably afford at the rate that it is set at.I was able to find a more reasonable alternate after school option which I am informed that once again there is not available transportation for. So I ask the question I have worked in SC for almost a year and (which was the main decision factor to moving here)I have had taxes for this state taken from my check weekly only to be told by the state that we will not provide you with a service that you technically help support along with many other parents that I am sure have this same interest as a concern. I have talked to many people in many places and was told by S. Sapp in the District 3 Board of Education office that " It is not the districts fault that I decided to move here!" This may be true but what about the parents of those children that lived here prior to building this wonderful new school in their back yards or for the parent in South Point who are also being told that there is nothing that can be done for there children? Maybe because Ms Sapp doesn't have children or maybe even grandchildren that are not affected by this situation it doesn't matter to her that these children are in the hands and face of danger unless we as parents and neighbors stand up for them! I hope she can lay down at night and rest knowing that these things are happening at this school as well as others that we may not know or hear about but I am not resting until there is a VALID resolution to this issue! I think some type of petition should be started in lieu of an answer are there any other parents that agree in the area or not? Just be aware of the transportation issue if you are looking to live within a mile and a half of the school because the local district can create stops for these children they just choose not to because it will cost them .13 cent per stop and an additional 1.30 per mile times the 180 days they are scheduled in school per year. We need our local board members to take a stand on this issue because that seems to be the only voice we have to get any type of resolution for our children, neighbor's children and the children to come.
