Default Babysitter

Hi all,

Hoping for some help, we are VERY apprehensive about leaving our kids with anyone but are going through a rough period and have been advised that we should make time for each other and go on a date. That being said, we have no clue where to even start with this as we want to make sure that we do all the proper things such as background checks, etc.

Do any of you have any recommendations on agencies or specific people you may have used that you feel safe leaving your children with. We're looking at perhaps a once a month thing with someone who is older and more experienced with children. Thank you guys!

I wouldn't take suggestions from people off the internet. Talk to your neighbors, people at Church, co-workers, etc. that you know and trust. I'm sure someone you know can recommend someone.

I've asked my son's teacher, maybe she'll have good suggestions. Thanks!

I was asking for suggestions for agencies as well as people that have babysat before, I of course would be researching and doing background checks on said people and agencies not just throwing my kids to strangers. As I mentioned in my initial post, I have never left my children with anyone at all other than their grandmothers on rare ocassions and my oldest is 7 at this point, so you can see that no I do not take this lightly nor would I just throw my children at someone blindly.

I know you wouldn't. I can tell that from the heartfelt way you asked in your original post. I just remember being young and trusting myself and there are so many evil people lurking out there to prey on children, it scared me. I just want to remind you to talk to people you know and trust first.

How about friends of the grandmothers? Some might like a few extra dollars. And the ones who don't have their own grandchildren might like the experience. Older women in the neighborhood or Church? Is there a college in your area? Or talk to the local high school guidance counselor for suggestions.

Best of luck and enjoy those nights out with your husband. One day the nest will be empty except for you and him!

Thanks LynchburgLover,

We are don't have any family here and moved here about a year ago, I'll ask in church tomorrow and hopefully we will find someone. I know personally the effects of leaving kids with just anyone and I know how it ruined my view of things forever.

I had one more thought. Since you have one in school, why not get two or three other Moms who may be in the same boat and start a co-op? So many people have relocated and don't have those built-in sitters! I was once in the same boat and your first note just worried me. Best of luck!

When my kids were younger, I always hired a neighborhood teenager when going out for an evening here or there. Don't people do this anymore? I had 2-3 three reliable girls to call on who loved babysitting my daughters...and they did a great job. They looked forward to the sitter coming. I'd feed the kids before we went out, so all the sitter had to do was play with the kids, give them a snack, and put them to bed. I always checked in with a call or two and was never too far from home.

Maybe there would be some teens in your church youth group who may be interested in sitting. Or what about your neighborhood? If you find someone who is interested, invite them over to spend time with you and the kids so everyone can get to know one another first and you can determine ther person's maturity and whether you (and the kids) are comfortable with the person.

I'm sorry you're going through a difficult time. I'm sure something will work out for you. Keep on it...date nights are important whether in a rough patch or not!

P.S. - What area do you live?

You can also check out www.care.com. I think you can get background checks and all kinds of info about any sitter you might want to meet up with. Hope that helps! Good luck
