I commute from Fort Mill to the Ballentyne area of Charlotte for work, and i drive home very late at night. I hit a deer at very low speed the other night, but, it was unharmed and ran away. I see a ton of deer on my ride home, and it seems like its inevitable ill hit one. So, what do I do if I hit one? Call 911? Seeing as I travel through 3 different counties to work, im unsure what I should do if I do hurt/kill one, and have damage to my car.

You can buy these things to put on your bumper ... deer warning whistles that are air activated or you can get real elaborate and more money and buy the electronic sonic ones. My husband had them on his motorcycle and I have seen deer come out on the tree line and stop ... I don't know if those things stopped the deer or not www. deerbusters. com/dee-7000.html or goggle Automobile Deer Repellents ... I was on Carowinds Blvd and a truck hit a deer ... didn't kill the deer but tore him up pretty bad ... the driver didn't stop ... a guy pulled over and shot the deer to get it out of pain. You take care you can do a lot of damage to yourself and your car if you should hit a deer.

If you do hit one that causes damage to your vehicle call the local law enforcement agency to get a police report which will be needed to show to your insurance agent.
Don't worry about the deer. It can't sue you.
In my neck of the woods if a deer is killed in a car/deer collision it is butchered and given to local food pantrys to help feed the homeless or is removed by animal control personel.

Take it from me, those deer whistles don't work.

What if I hit a deer?

don't if you can avoid it. I hit one at high speed about 55 mph. The deer died and they can do a lot of damage to your vehicle. I could not believe the damage it did to my car. I only had liability so the repair was out of my pocket.

I heard they are attracted to lights and that is why they head toward cars....not sure....all the ones I've seen along the roads over the last few years, even the highways, once my headlight picks them up, they seem frozen like statues like the light is glaring their vision and they stop.

My father's house near Gold Hill Rd was victimized by some deer, ate up most of his vegatable garden. They would come back every night.
So, even though it was in a subdivision with no woods nearby, there are plenty of deer in the Fort Mill area.
