Description: The Mayo Clinic Hospital opened in 1998 and about 10 years later received approval to expand by about 2 million square feet to about 8 million square feet total. Mayo is the first hospital planned, designed, and built by the Mayo Clinic. A 205-bed facility, its focus is to provide inpatient care to support the 65 medical and surgical specialties practiced at the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. The hospital has 244 licensed beds and 18 operating rooms. It also has a Level II emergency department and a full-service clinical laboratory, urgent-care services, an intensive-care unit, a bone-marrow transplant facility, and a sleep studies lab for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. The hospital also offers a liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant program, with success rates higher than the national average. The recent expansion plans slated a new building for specialized cancer treatment, such as proton-beam therapy.
