Description: Heritage Square is a cherished city block that contains the only remaining residential structures from the original town site of Phoenix. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s a grouping of eight restored Victorian houses in a pedestrian-only enclave. You can find it in the shadow of the Arizona Science Center and Chase Field. The most eye-catching is the Rosson House, built in 1895, with its expansive veranda and an octagonal gray turret topped by an elaborate finial. The Rosson House’s 10 rooms feature pressed-tin ceilings and parquet floors. Tucked next to it is the Forest’s Carriage House, which serves as the ticket office and gift shop. The charge for guided tours is $7.50 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, $4 for children 6 to 12, and free for children younger than 6.The Arizona Doll & Toy Museum is inside the Stevens House. It showcases antique and modern dolls, dollhouses, and toys. An authentic-looking 1912 schoolroom features antique dolls propped in desks like students. Admission is only a few dollars. Heritage Square also features the Teeter House, now home to the Nobuo Asian-style teahouse; the Silva House, now home to the Rose and Crown English pub; the Lath House Pavilion, erected in 1980 to facilitate the many outdoor festivals and markets held at Heritage Square; the Duplex, a small house that serves as city offices; and the Baird Machine Shop, dating from 1929 and now home of Pizzeria Bianco (see the Restaurants chapter for details on what many consider the best pizza joint in the US).
