Description: On this 18-acre experimental farm, horticulturist Luther Burbank built a cottage and worked to perfect Gravenstein apples, plums, cherries, grapes, and lilies. Although he lived and worked in Santa Rosa, this is where he conducted his horticultural research between 1895 and 1926. Free guided tours, available by appointment from April through mid-October, explore Burbank’s gardens and visit his restored cottage. The gardens are open for free self-guided tours year-round.

Description: A restored railroad depot houses the collections of the Western Sonoma County Historical Society. The Triggs Reference Room contains books, photographs, magazines, newspapers, audiotapes, and videotapes on local history. West County Museum is open 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. There is no admission fee, but donations are welcomed.

Description: Once voted Sonoma County’s best theater troupe, Main Street Theatre was formed in 1991, then in 1996 teamed up with a sister company to form Sonoma County Repertory Theatre. The group offers an intriguing selection of fare—the 2008 season featured Moonlight and Magnolias, Shirley Valentine, and Rabbit Hole. In addition, the theater offers year-round multidisciplinary training for both children and adults, plus children’s theater and a summer Shakespeare festival. Admission prices are generally $18 to $23.
