Nightlife - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Nightlife

What’s there to see and do in the evenings and wee hours of the morning in Greater Fort Lauderdale?

Quite a bit. Scattered around the city—particularly in Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale—are bars, pubs, and lounges that range from chic to dive, from beer to wine, and from quiet to deafening. Those who like to dance can get their fix at posh dance clubs that play club and salsa.

If you prefer to kick back and listen to some live music, check out one of the city’s many live music venues; clusters of beachy and casual places line Fort Lauderdale Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The primary area to go drinking in, however, is Himmarshee, located along 2nd Street in downtown Fort Lauderdale. We’ve listed a few of the best places here, but frankly, most bars spill out onto the sidewalks on weekends, and the streets turn into one large party pen. Do be careful though—police patrol this area voraciously, so don’t assume you can wander across the street in a drunken stupor and not be picked up for being drunk and disorderly. Many local restaurants also feature a lounge atmosphere and, in some cases, live music.

If this appeals to you, take a closer look at the areas along or around Las Olas. Most of the spots are true restaurants, but later at night the entire area feels more “loungey.”

Overview

There are far too many bars, clubs, and music venues to list here, so this chapter offers up some of the city’s most popular nightlife options. Before you head out, take note: Most of the bars and clubs in this chapter require guests to be 21 or older, with a valid ID. The legal drinking age in Florida is 21, and most clubs and bars don’t let in anyone who is younger. Often Greater Fort Lauderdale clubs and bars charge a cover of anywhere from a couple dollars up to $10 or even $20. This does not include drinks or food; it merely gets you in the door. Bars often have higher cover charges on weekends and for special events. Many bars offer happy hour specials, although the hours, days, and discounts vary. For live music venues, it’s always a good idea to purchase your tickets early. Many events—especially over holiday weekends—sell out. Tickets can be purchased at the location, on the venue’s website, or by phone, unless indicated otherwise. Bars, lounges, and pubs in Greater Fort Lauderdale typically close by 3 or 4 a.m. on the weekends and earlier during the week. Hours and days do change sometimes, though, so it’s a good idea to call ahead.

Nightlife - Performing Arts

If you can say it, sing it, perform it, act it, express it, show it, hum it, dance it, joke about it, mime it, play it, or otherwise perform it, you’ll find it—whatever “it” is—in Greater Fort Lauderdale. Particularly during the High Season, this area hums with an artistic vibe that’s matched by only a few other places in America. There’s a nonstop parade of world-famous actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and comedians. There’s a nonstop parade, as well, of actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and comedians who will one day be world-famous. And there’s a huge vein of local talent that’s mined here as well.

The places where all these performances take place are as varied as the performances themselves. One night you may be sitting front-row orchestra at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, one of America’s performing-arts showpieces. The next night you may be sitting at an outdoor fountain, watching a wonderfully creative mime. And the next night . . . who knows?

People who haven’t been here for awhile are always amazed at what they find in the new Greater Fort Lauderdale. This is a town, don’t forget, that, until 20 years ago, was known mostly for its rowdy Spring Breaks. These days, however, you’ll find so many performances you’ll want to attend that you simply won’t be able to attend them all. Theater here now ranges from Shakespeare to avant-garde. Musical performances range from country-and-western to opera, and everything in between. Dance performances—and local companies—run the gamut from classical ballet to modern interpretive. And singing performances range from Broadway to gospel.

Overview

The main proof of a growing arts area has always been in the number and vitality of its local organizations, and in the talents of their performers. And, if that’s the case, what was once a center for spring breakers is now a center of ground-breaking entertainment.

Broward County residents appreciate the performance arts. Many of them, if not most, moved here some years back from places up north where the arts were a regular part of their lives. And many of them have gotten involved, through their hard work and their hard-earned financial contributions, in creating the vibrant performing-arts atmosphere that now characterizes Greater Fort Lauderdale. And now you can enjoy the fruits of their labors, in venues from state-of-the-art facilities hosting internationally renowned luminaries to cozy little theaters hosting homegrown talent.

2. Bierbrunnen Pub

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 540-2109
Address: 427 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd.

Description: If you are looking for an escape from the sightseeing, tattoo shops, crowded clubs, and touristy areas dominating this stretch of the beach, this bar hides down an alley off the main drag. It’s a German pub, but the best beer selection ranges from Pabst to Rogue to Oktoberfest and Holy Mackerel, and the bare bones elements for a cocktail that doesn’t involve anything fancy—this is where serious drinkers come; for a fruity alcoholic slushie you’ll need to head elsewhere. The place is more for drinking, but if you have a hankering for German fare, they do a good bratwurst, schnitzel, and potato salad.

3. Coyote Ugly

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 764-8459
Address: 220 SW 2nd St.

Description: Yeah, it’s kind of like the movie, but people flock to this Himmarshee Village staple for the beer and shots as much as they do for the hot female bartenders and random guests strutting their stuff on the bar. It’s raucous and no frills in a space that is decidedly without decor, but you’ve come for a stiff Jägermeister and a rowdy night out, right?

6. Elbo Room

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 463-4615
Address: 241 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd.

Description: Back when Fort Lauderdale was known as “Fort Liquordale,” this place was one of its staple drinking dens, and it’s survived through the area’s change and trend to the upscale. Perhaps it’s the cheap beer, or the salty characters at the bar who merrily mix with unassuming tourists and locals in search of something real, but whatever the reason, we’re glad this beachside staple has survived the odds—it’s been operating since 1938. Live music (usually a one- or two-man show spewing old favorites) dominates most nights, and the location right across the street from the beach means its always flip-flop time at the Elbo Room.

7. The Grateful Palate

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Address: 817 SE 17th St.

8. Howl at the Moon/Sloppy Joe’s

Description: This popular beach spot is known for its dueling pianos (read, sing-along with the crowd). Vibe is Key West—in fact, the space is a takeoff on the famed Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Key West. The place attracts a mainly youngish crowd and a smattering of older tourists. Even if sing-alongs aren’t your thing, it’s generally a fun night out, and there’s always one tune you know you wanna belt your heart out to.

9. Lulu’s Bait Shack

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 463-7425
Address: 17 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd.

Description: One of the most popular after-the-beach spots to hit (perhaps for its massive fruit cocktails—you know, the ones called “fishbowls” that come in purple or green and arrive with 20 straws in them). Alternatively, the requisite drink called the hurricane, plus cocktails served in souvenir glasses, are also on offer. Not your style? Normal beer is also in plentiful supply. This fun, Cajun-Creole bar and grill sits right across from the beach (stellar views) and offers a convivial atmosphere that’s always welcoming and relaxed. They run a very popular happy hour and live music several nights a week, from rock to pop ensembles.

10. Parrot Lounge

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 563-1493
Address: 911 Sunrise Lane

Description: First, a silly, kitschy atmosphere and decor welcome you: A buxom, bathing suit–clad siren from the ‘50s greets you at the door—no, not really, but a wooden mannequin version does. Next, you hit the bar, filled with locals and offering a slew of local and national favorite beer options. Then the old-school jukebox starts belting out classic rock and bam—you’ve found your home away from home! Cozy booths round out the space, perfect for quiet conversation in relaxed surroundings.

Address: 3033 NE 32nd Ave.

Description: Whether you pull up on your boat at the dock or zip over in your car out front, this established fave is both a restaurant and bar, with a heavy emphasis on the bar bit. It’s a rockin’ and sometimes raucous affair, with evenings ranging from live blues nights to hot-bod contests; the flavor of the evening can be either most civilized or reminiscent of an MTV Spring Break party—to be frank, most nights the atmosphere lingers somewhere neutral in between. Be sure to check out the cozy tiki bar out back.

12. Sushi Rock

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 462-5541
Address: 1515 E. Las Olas Blvd.

Description: Evenings sipping cocktails and Kirin at this sushi joint’s sublime bar are as popular as the raw seafood they serve.

13. Village Pump

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (954) 776-5840
Address: 4404 El Mar Dr.

Description: Upscale but smack in the beach hub of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, the low-lit Village Pump serves a casual crowd that doesn’t want run-of-the-mill cheap libations and snacks. Drinks slide across a marble bar, the wine list is exceptional, and the food comes from its sister restaurant, the Village Grill, located next door. But one of the best reasons to come here is the outside tables, which pair a fab ocean breeze with fun people watching.

14. Voodoo Lounge

City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Category: Nightlife

Address: 2032 Hollywood Blvd.

Description: This Hookah Lounge and bar isn’t your average puffing joint—the music is loud, and the lighting is like a 1970s disco that lost its way. But somehow it all works and makes this place cozy and inviting. If flavored hookahs aren’t your thing, there are a slew of cheap drinks on the menu.
