Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (305) 940-9655
Address: 15400 Biscayne Blvd.

Description: Despite its proximity to the Deep South, good barbeque can be hard to find in Miami. Chef and owner Howie “Bulldog” Kleinberg, who appeared memorably on Top Chef Miami, opened Bulldog in hopes to fulfill the market need for no-frills, North Carolina ‘cue. On the menu you will find typical BBQ offerings like baby back ribs, pulled pork, and brisket along with some other unexpected additions like a shrimp and oyster Po-boy, a take on the popular New Orleans sandwich. There’s also a grilled chicken and avocado sandwich for the health conscious (though it is served on a buttery biscuit). While whether it’s the best BBQ in Miami is up for debate, it was recently hailed by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the top 10 barbeque restaurants in America.

4. Dogma Grill

City: North Miami, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (305) 759-3433
Address: 7030 Biscayne Blvd.

Description: Dogma Grill has more than just plain ol’ dogs. A few of the specialties include the Chicago with mustard, onions, peppers, pickles, and relish, and the Cali with avocado, bacon, sour cream, and vinaigrette. Those looking to really indulge should try the burrito dog, which includes two hot dogs, bacon, chili, onions, and cheese wrapped up in a flour burrito. Healthier options including salads and vegetarian sides are also available for those who keep it simple. As a whole, this spot is by far one of the most affordable in the city with prices starting at $3.15 per dog. There are fancier dogs with toppings such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and various types of cheese for $5.95 but Dogma is still unavoidably affordable.

5. Heelsha

Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (305) 919-8393
Address: 1550 NE 164th St.

Description: Owners Tipu Rahman and Bithi Begum stick to traditional Bengali and Indian recipes at their northern Miami restaurant. Along with the familiar dishes such as naan, vegetable samosas, and chicken tandoori, there are dishes unique to their native Bangladesh like mas bhora, fried fish fritters of grouper, and hilsa, a sweet freshwater fish from which the restaurant derives its name. The menu also features plenty of options for vegetarians and an assortment of refreshing desserts to cool down taste buds after spicy meals such as mango ice cream. Prices are fairly low, with most vegetarian entrees costing around $12 and most meat entrees costing around $20. The restaurant is open for dinner only.

6. Kebab Indian Restaurant

City: North Miami, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (305) 940-6309
Address: 514 NE 167th St.

Description: The highlight of this restaurant is the $10.99 all-you-can-eat lunch special, which runs daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurant is closed Mon but it is a local favorite given the lack of solid Indian restaurants in Miami. Traditional dishes like samosas are a favorite appetizer and chutneys, achars, and bread can all be ordered a la carte. Most dishes are available in any variety of lamb, chicken, beef, or vegetable and the food is 100 percent halal. The restaurant has been rated as a top-notch Indian joint for several years.

7. Mama Jennie’S Italian Restaurant

City: North Miami, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (305) 757-3627
Address: 11720 NE 2nd Ave.

Description: Mama Jennie’s takes the cake as being one of Miami’s most simultaneously affordable and enjoyable Italian joints. It is a kind of under-the-radar Miami establishment, though it has been around for over three decades. Lunch specials are $5.95 Mon through Fri but the dinner is really what draws crowds. Pasta dishes come with unlimited garlic rolls and soup or salad and start at $7.95. Pizzas, alcoholic-, and non-alcoholic beverages are available as well as seafood to add to a variety of dishes.

8. Here Comes The Sun

Description: Here Comes the Sun has been a North Miami staple for years, attracting a broader audience than just vegetarians and health nuts. The earthy menu has sandwich choices with ingredients such as grilled tofu and hummus. There are beef burgers in addition to turkey and sunburger (veggie burger) options. It may sound unusual but the brown rice with cheese and their signature sun sauce is a crowd favorite, but the menu is extensive and can be customized.
