9. Atlantic Avenue

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping

Description: A darkened street of derelict businesses (and people) two decades ago, Atlantic was transformed in the 1990s into a fashionable destination-type area, with brick sidewalks, old-fashioned street lamps, and very new-fashioned galleries, restaurants, and clubs. The shops are a funky collection of the cool and the unusual. Some have actually been around since the derelict days, but have survived because of the quality of what they sell, and because local residents didn’t want to let them go.

10. Mizner Park

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (561) 362-0606

It’s a multifaceted urban center with beautiful shops and restaurants, and upscale high-rise apartment and condos overlooking it all. You’ll find very unusual men’s and women’s clothing boutiques such as Bolufe, specialty shops such as Spice and Tea Exchange, interesting bar/eateries such as The Dubliner Irish Pub, jewelers such as Van Cleef & Arpels, cultural options like The Centre for the Arts at Mizner Park, entertainment options including a cinema, and dining possibilities such as Ruth’s Chris Steak House and a Boca landmark called Max’s Grille.

11. Royal Palm Place

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (561) 392-8920

Description: Royal Palm Place was Boca’s original downtown upscale shopping and dining center, which has undergone a renovation in recent years that has restored it to its original glory. It was referred to for many years as “The Pink Plaza,” for the Addison Mizner-type tropical-pink color that it still wears. There are many one-of-a-kind boutiques, salons, and services here, among them the Yaacov Heller Gallery, with an artist who has crafted custom jewelry for a Who’s Who of the international set; the ultra-chic Gianni’s Hair Salo; and Exor Galleries, a treasure-trove of distinctive art works. And there are some wonderful international eateries here, many of which offer outside dining.

12. The Shops At Boca Center

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (561) 361-9804

Description: This is a place of quiet elegance, a place that doesn’t have to shout out loud how wonderful it is because its customers do it. It’s a collection of fine specialty and apparel shops, jewelry and one-of-a-kind gift shops, gourmet food and chocolate shops, and some of the coolest restaurants in town. It’s an outdoor plaza; all shops have front doors opening to the outside. You can pick up a special wine or gourmet food at Joseph’s Classic Market, while you’re savoring something from Hoffman’s Chocolates. Or, you may want to pick out a suit from Guy LaFerrera or Jos. A. Bank, and then enhance the day by treating yourself to one of Morton’s the Steakhouse’s thickest, juiciest cuts of beef. Perhaps you’ll want to pamper yourself at Spalano Salon and Spa.

13. Town Center Shops

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (561) 368-6000

Description: This is where Boca comes to shop for variety and quality. There are nearly 200 upscale shops here, ranging from the tiny Swarovski shop to anchor department stores like Bloomingdale’s, Nordstom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy’s. You’ll also find excellent specialty shops offering apparel, jewelry, gifts, and housewares, along with household names like Ralph Lauren Polo, American Eagle, and Banana Republic. There are also dozens of kiosks with items you probably haven’t thought much about before, but which you just gotta have now. The mall is covered by a “soft” roof which allows sunlight in. It’s always filled with discriminating shoppers. And you’re bound to see a celebrity or two if you look carefully enough.

14. City Place

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (561) 820-0074

Description: City Place was built in the mid-1990s to resemble an Italian town center. But its net effect was to transform downtown West Palm Beach into the glittering urban core it was always meant to be. You’ll walk among atmospheric sidewalk cafes, interesting stores like Williams–Sonoma (exclusive kitchen and housewares), Restoration Hardware (with imaginative items for the home), Macy’s, Barnes & Noble, an IMAX theater, and swank nightclubs. And, just like the Italian plazas it was meant to resemble, the central plaza here is filled with fine shops (including a gelato shop, speaking of Italian), street performers, and people strolling with bags of chocolate and taking it all in.

15. Clematis Street

City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (561) 833-8873

Description: Clematis Street was the original heart of West Palm Beach. But, like so many other Main Streets in urban America, it fell into disrepair (and disrepute) toward the end of the 20th-century. However, the city’s Downtown Development Authority came to the rescue. Today, Clematis Street is better than ever, a gleaming testament to what an urban Main Street should be. It’s a 24/7 hot-spot, crowded during the daytime with professionals and businesspeople, and at night with a fashionable crowd eager to try out each new restaurant and nightspot. For shopping there’s Bright Idea Design Studio, Uomo Fashion, Green Olive Market Place, Authentic Provence, Eaton Fine Art, Atmosphere, Michael’s Jewelers, Richard Plumer Design, and many more.
