The University of Maryland Medical Center near the Inner Harbor and Mercy Medical Center are two centers that are outstanding in their fields. Most specifically, the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center has been a leader in caring for critically injured people since the 1970s.
Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, has saved hundreds of children through his surgical skills and is particularly well-known for separations of conjoined twins.
Dr. Robert Gallo, a scientist and leader in the research of AIDS, opened a facility at the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1996, bringing to Baltimore a first-rate warrior against one of the era’s most fatal and devastating diseases.
While advertisements and promotional materials make it seem as if there’s great competition among the hospitals, a good deal of their success is in working together to help patients. Patients are routinely sent from one hospital to another for consultations, second opinions, and surgeries. The hospitals in the area play host to thousands of patients from all over the world, who come to the area seeking the best care possible.

8. Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center And Hospital

Description: Started as the Hebrew Friendly Inn for the Old in the 1890s, the 172-bed facility is now a specialty hospital. Named after Louis H. Levin, executive director of the Associated Jewish Charities from 1921 until his death in 1923, the hospital observes all Jewish laws and rituals and is strictly kosher. Now part of the Lifebridge Health System, of which Sinai Hospital is also a part, Levindale has 202 nursing home beds, 50 specialty long-term-stay beds, 20 psychiatric-rehab beds, and 16 comprehensive rehabilitation beds. Employing about 600 people, the hospital also provides subacute care.

Description: Founded in 1922, the 70-bed nonprofit facility provides long-term pediatric care for children with complex needs. In 2006, it came under the joint control of the Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland Medical System. Employing about 500 people, the hospital’s specialties include inpatient and outpatient care for infants and children with rehabilitation and special medical needs, including asthma and obesity.
