Description: The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is considered one the finest university collections in the country. The museum exhibits works from the Washington University permanent collection, special loan exhibitions, and student and faculty shows. The permanent collection includes significant holdings of 19th- and 20th-century American and European paintings, sculptures, and prints as well as major contemporary works. Artists represented in the collection include George Caleb Bingham, Thomas Cole, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, and Jean-François Millet. Closed Tuesday and university holidays.

Description: This four-story, historic French Revival mansion on the Saint Louis University campus houses the university’s extensive art collection, including works by Dale Chihuly, Joachim Probst, Miguel Martinez, Joan Miró, Renato Laffranchi, and Charles Lotton. The collection also includes modern and contemporary art by Richard Serra, Ernest Trova, Serge Poliakoff, and Arnoldo Pomodoro, and more than 2,000 pieces of memorabilia and fine art donated to the university by the Cartier family, of the internationally renowned Cartier Jewelers. Open Wednesday through Sunday.

Description: Built in 1912, this building hosts a wide variety of concerts, and it also houses six art galleries. The galleries feature changing exhibits in five categories: photography, architecture, St. Louis artists and collections, jazz history, and children’s art. The galleries offer more than 20 yearly exhibitions, and the museum collaborates with local, national and international institutions and individuals in the art world. In addition to the free exhibits, the Sheldon offers a number of educational programs such as Tuesday Evening Gallery Talks, Lunchtime Lectures in Architecture and Master Class Workshops for children, Closed Sunday and Monday.

Description: Dedicated in 1936 to St. Louis’s veterans and war dead, this museum has exhibits that include uniforms, photographs, weaponry, war souvenirs, and regalia. Located between Market, Pine, 13th and 14th streets in downtown, it is the first of two war memorials in St. Louis that were built to honor World War I veterans. Notable features include the massive stone columns with carved stone panels between the columns that bear the faces of war veterans, and large stone statues of winged horses and military men and women, representing courage, loyalty, vision, and sacrifice.

Description: Housed within the City Fire Marshall’s offices, the display includes photos taken at some of the city’s most famous fires; a life-size statue of Florian, commander of the Roman Army and patron saint of firefighters; and more than 700 artifacts on permanent loan to the museum from the Missouri Historical Society. This collection of historical fire-fighting equipment and memorabilia includes items such as fire helmets, glass hand-grenade fire extinguishers, badges and medals, a collection of toy fire trucks, as well as fire plates, leather water buckets, and an extensive collection of fire marks, emblems, and plaques from around the world dating from the 1700s. Description: Opened in 1929 as a vaudeville palace, the Fox continues to present live entertainment, including touring Broadway shows and music, dance, and comedy concerts. Throughout the years the “Fabulous Fox” has been a showcase for movie premieres, great stage attractions, special events, and many of the famous personalities of show business. The incredibly ornate theater has been restored to its original splendor and its Siamese-Byzantine decor. Even without a show on the stage, this facility is a destination in itself. Tours are offered Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Located along the original Route 66 corridor, the 419-acre park is a boon to visitors who want to enjoy nature and see interesting historical displays showcasing Route 66. Bridgehead Inn, a 1935 roadhouse, serves as the park’s visitor center and houses a collection of artifacts from the Mother Road. The park also offers road-weary travelers a place to picnic, exercise, bird watch, or just enjoy nature. There are also a number of walking, bicycling, and equestrian trails throughout the park.
