1. Paperhand Puppet Intervention

City: Saxapahaw, NC
Category: Nightlife
Telephone: (919) 923-1857
Address: 306 Saxapahaw Church Rd.

Description: Using giant puppets, shadow play, masked actors, dancers on stilts, music, and a variety of other media, Paperhand tells stories and fables that express the company’s dedication to progressive social and political ideals. Performances might involve a 15-foot Buddha puppet, a troupe of jugglers on stilts, or marionettes in the form of crows. Enormous Paperhand Puppets lead the People’s Procession, a parade open to spectators, during Raleigh’s First Night New Year’s Eve celebration, and they frequently appear at outdoor festivals. Paperhand stages performances outdoors as well, mainly at the Forest Theater on the UNC–Chapel Hill campus and the N.C. Museum of Art’s Joseph Bryan amphitheater in Raleigh. Paperhand’s creations inspire the imagination, but their plays are not always appropriate for children. Many have adult themes that leave younger audiences struggling to keep up. Make sure the performance is geared toward children before you go.
