Description: The NHCC’s History and Literary Arts programs include poetry and other readings, author lectures, and book signings. The National Latino Writers Conference has been held here since 2003 and is one of the center’s most exciting initiatives, with a superb faculty and a record of successes ensuing for attending writers. Writers such as Rudolfo Anaya, Sandra Cisneros, Luis Alberto Urrea, and Jimmy Santiago Baca have presented at the NHCC. The center sponsors events for several days each year around Dia del Libro or World Book Day (April 23). It also mounts literary exhibits and holds a permanent collection of more than 14,000 books and other archives focusing on Hispanic history worldwide, especially in the American Southwest.

Description: Southwest Writers is an organization with over 600 members writing in all forms and genres. Despite the name, the group is based in Albuquerque, and all events are held here. Description: Albuquerque Photographers Gallery was founded in 2003 as a cooperative venture for local photographers to exhibit and sell contemporary fine art photography. Membership in the cooperative is juried and limited to 10 photographers, including founding photographer Marilyn Hunter, Robert Medina Cook, Urey Lemen, Tom Spross, and Pat O’Brien. The gallery aims to promote fine art photography as a major participant in the visual arts, and it hosts themed exhibitions three times a year. This charming Old Town adobe gallery is located on Poco Apoco Patio off San Felipe Street. Closed Tuesdays.

The gallery offers Doug West’s serigraph landscapes and oil paintings and wood sculptures from the award-winning Navajo artist Sheldon Harvey. Description: The Arts Alliance organization advocates for the performing, visual, and literary arts in the Albuquerque metropolitan area. Their 1,500-square-foot bright and airy gallery presents monthly shows by regional art groups. Examples include the New Mexico Bead Society, the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council, New Mexico Potters & Clay Artists, New Mexico Gourd Society, New Mexico Wood Turners, Pastel Society of New Mexico, and Rio Rancho Art Association. The gallery is right next to the offices of the Arts Alliance, at the north end of the Courtyard Shopping Complex at San Mateo and Lomas. Closed Sunday and most Saturdays.

Description: In business since 1982, and formerly the Dartmouth Street Gallery, DSG Fine Art is an elegant gallery owned by John Cacciatore. It presents work by major local artists such as Frank McCulloch, former recipient of the Governors Award in the Arts and recognized by the Albuquerque Arts Alliance as Albuquerque Artist of the Year. Artists include Larry Bell, Kevin Zuckerman, Martin Facey, and Victoria Martinez Rodgers, whose work has been acquired for the permanent collection at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. DSG Fine Art also shows the tapestries of Nancy Kozikowski, vice president and artist in residence.

Description: It’s hard to miss this museum-style gallery on Downtown Central Avenue with its graphically stylish glass facade. The innovative exhibits cover the gamut of media and disciplines, in styles from traditional through contemporary, with curated shows and collaborative projects from regional, national, and overseas artists. Work from both established and emerging artists can be seen here. Exhibits sometimes feature a combination of installation, video, and performance art. 516 ARTS is an independent nonprofit organization, and the gallery also hosts readings, literary events, and educational programs.
