Description: Presbyterian Medical Services is the primary provider of mental health and counseling services in Santa Fe County. A nonprofit corporation, its mission is to furnish high-quality, affordable medical, dental, mental health, hospice, retirement, and other human services throughout the Southwest, particularly to Hispanic and Native American communities. PMS is the successor to the Presbyterian Church’s medical mission to the Southwest, which began in 1901. When the church could no longer provide financial support, PMS incorporated in 1969 to carry on the work. Although it’s an independent organization, it maintains its ties to the church through a covenant with the Presbytery of Santa Fe and the Synod of the Southwest. PMS employs about 1,000 people in 82 program sites in 38 communities, including primary health-care centers and agencies; comprehensive mental health-care programs; home health-care and hospice programs; nursing homes; developmental disabilities programs for children and adults; substance abuse treatment; Head Start programs; AIDS and other health education and counseling; and a pharmacy consulting service. PMS also offers the following services:Traumatic Brain Injury Program, 2960 Rodeo Park Dr. West, (505) 986-9633, provides case management for individuals with traumatic brain injury by assisting clients and their families in reintegrating into the community. At the same address, Crisis Response of Santa Fe, (505) 820-1440 (office), (505) 820-6333 (hotline), is a suicide prevention program with a telephone hotline and mobile crisis team, both available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in Santa Fe County. Volunteers trained in short-term telephone crisis intervention operate the hotline to offer immediate suicide counseling as well as information and referrals. The mobile crisis team comprises professionals who respond to suicide, drug/alcohol abuse, and psychiatric emergencies.The Hospice Center, 1400 Chama St., (505) 988-1477, (800) 880-8001, established in 1991, provides at-home care for people with terminal illnesses and their families. Its registered nurses are specialists in pain and symptom control and are on call twenty-four hours a day. The center offers regularly scheduled nursing visits; volunteer support services for patients and their families; home health aide services for personal care; social work visits for counseling; pastoral counseling and referral; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; bereavement services; medication; and medical treatment, equipment, and supplies. The center offers support for individuals and groups, including schools or businesses, facing life-threatening illness or experiencing grief or loss.Ortíz Mountain Health Center, 06B Main St., Cerrillos, (505) 471-6266, open since 1995, is a three-day-a-week primary health-care clinic located in Cerrillos, New Mexico, about 20 miles southwest of Santa Fe. The center provides diagnostic and treatment services, limited pharmacy and laboratory services, and prenatal and perinatal care and treatment of minor emergencies. It coordinates with health-care providers in Santa Fe for referral and specialty care.PMS Home Care, 1400 Chama St., (505) 988-4156, (800) 880-8001, provides comprehensive home-care services to residents of Santa Fe County with an emphasis on rehabilitation. Licensed by both Medicaid and Medicare, it provides skilled nursing, home health aides, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and medical social services. The staff works with physicians, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and medical equipment suppliers to make a smooth transition to home health care.Santa Fe Community Guidance Center, 2960 Rodeo Park Dr. West, (505) 986-9633, is a mental-health outpatient facility for day treatment; case management; and supported living and employment. The program provides rehabilitation for the long-term mentally ill through its Spirit Club, (505) 986-8827, which focuses on social, recreational, and vocational skills. Santa Fe Community Guidance Center, (505) 982-8899, founded as a community coalition of organizations and individuals, is primarily an educational organization that aims to increase community awareness about substance abuse and prevention and ensure the existence of treatment and recovery options. Among the programs it has initiated are life-skills training, including parenting; special training for clergy; and a free/low-cost small business employee assistance program to help workers cope with marriage and family issues, alcohol and drug abuse, gambling, depression, or financial troubles.
