Description: This free weekly is a favorite among Santa Fe’s workday lunch crowd, especially lone diners who thumb through it while downing green chile cheeseburgers at neighborhood joints all over town. The Thrifty Nickel is a hefty little tabloid with 24 to 32 pages chock-full of mostly local ads trying to sell everything from cockatiels to used equipment from nearby Los Alamos National Laboratory (the folks who brought you “The Bomb”). Every once in a while, you’ll happen across an ad praising St. Jude or one of the other saints—just another reminder of Santa Fe’s Catholic roots. In addition to merchandise and garage sales, the Thrifty Nickel advertises real estate, both sales and rentals; local and national jobs; and, of course, vehicles—lots of them. It also contains a one-page listing of local businesses and services. Thrifty Nickel distributes 20,000 copies a week to racks throughout Santa Fe County and parts of neighboring Río Arriba and San Miguel Counties.
