Description: Owned by the New York-based giant media conglomerate Advance Publications, the Oregonian casts a long shadow—not just extending over Portland but over the entire state. Loved by some, intensely disliked by others, it seems everyone has an opinion about “the Big O.” It is charged with being too conservative and pro big-business on one hand, while on the other, it is accused of leaning too far to the left. Even its critics would agree, however, that as the only major daily newspaper in Oregon, the Oregonian, with the largest daily circulation in state (upwards of 250,000), dominates the print media scene. That said, like many daily newspapers, it faces major circulation challenges as the landscape for the newspaper business shifts. The Sunday Oregonian (circulation aboout 350,000) is still filled with auto, real estate, and other advertisements. The Friday Oregonian is also noteworthy for the special Arts and Entertainment Guide, information about everything from unique places to go hiking, biking, and bird-watching to classical music performances and public lectures. The guide also features comprehensive coverage of clubs, restaurants, movies, and Portland’s live music and fine arts and literary scene. Also, the listing of restaurants and the 10-day planner—an A&E special fold-out calendar—are particularly useful.
