Description: We were grateful to finally have children so that we could have an excuse to visit the Enchanted Forest, just south of Salem and a little bit less than an hour’s drive south from Portland. This amusement park features imaginative rides, displays, and activities for children of all ages (though some rides have height requirements). One of the nicest things about this place is the balance between thrilling rides and gentler activities. A half-timbered English Village and a replicated Old West town are fun to poke around, while a bobsled-inspired roller coaster and a scary haunted house provide more adrenaline-inducing entertainment. And the Big Timber Log Ride is a fun, splashy way to cool off on a hot summer day. The fountain features a light show coordinated to its cascading jets. Children also love exploring the storybook-theme displays, including the rabbit hole from Alice in Wonderland, the cottage of the Seven Dwarfs, and the home of the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. In addition, you’ll find bumper boats, a Ferris wheel, and trails to explore. The price of admission will allow you into most activities, but a number of the most popular features—including the haunted house, the log ride, and the bumper boats—require an additional fee. Ride bracelets are in addition to the cost of admission, but they are probably the best deal. Concessions are available, but picnics are welcome. Children two and younger are admitted at no charge. The park is easily accessed from the freeway. Take I-5 south from Portland to exit 248 (Sunnyside-Turner) to get there. High season is the summer; then, it’s open from !0 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and until 6 or 7 p.m. on the weekends. During the fall and winter, it’s usually only open on the weekends. Check the website’s calendar before you head down.
