Description: The fair is held on Father’s Day on the lovely grounds of the hatchery. It’s designed as a family event, a day when dads, moms, kids, and extended families can be together in a beautiful setting and have fun. Besides children’s activities, there’s brunch in Mrs. Ruby Booth’s garden at the historic house. Parents can watch the demonstrations on fishing and wildlife, and everyone will enjoy feeding the trout and ducks and touring the hatchery museum. 3. Festival In The Park

Description: The Festival in the Park, held on the third full weekend in July, is a huge, popular event with more than 300 vendors. Arts and crafts of every variety, having passed the jury’s discriminating eye, are presented in booths for the public’s pleasure and purchase. In addition, there’s a wonderful variety of food, jazz bands, dancing, music, and children’s events and performances. These entertainments run all day long, so you can rest and snack, then walk around and look some more. The vendors pay a fee to display their work, but the festival is free to everyone else, except for the first night, when there is a $5 charge which helps to fund the Spearfish Arts Council.

4. Ruby’S Garden Party

Description: The elegantly beautiful D.C. Booth home and gardens on the fish hatchery grounds are the setting for Ruby’s Garden Party. Mrs. Ruby Booth, a charming hostess, loved to entertain; this party is named in her honor and is patterned after her gracious style and evokes the charm of the early 1900s. This lovely, dressy affair is held in mid-Aug in the garden behind the home and includes a champagne dinner with musical accompaniment. Advance registration is required. Proceeds from the party help the D.C. Booth Society maintain the historic home and grounds.

5. Black Hills Airport Fly-In

Description: Pilots and aviation buffs alike love this annual event, which takes place on a Saturday in September. Seventy-some planes have been displayed, including vintage warbirds as well as experimental planes, ultralights, and helicopters. Pilots can fly their planes in, and spectators can take rides and enjoy the displays. Demonstrations and food are offered, too. You can watch the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a very special event. The fly-in is free to everyone, pilots and spectators alike.

6. Harvest Fest

Description: Two blocks of Main Street are blocked off for the annual Harvest Fest. Enjoy crafts, kids’ entertainment, apple pie–baking contests, music, displays, puppet shows, a quilt show, and more, all free. A new addition to this event is the Fiddle Fest, the only sanctioned fiddling contest in South Dakota. Everyone is welcome to compete in this toe-tappin’ hoedown—the first performance in 2003 drew musicians from the entire midwest region. Impressive talent vies for a sponsored ride to the national competition. There is an entry fee to compete, but the public can watch for free.

7. Taste Of Spearfish

Description: This city-park event, generally on the third Thursday of the month, features more than a dozen local restaurants boasting their signature dishes in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. $1 admission and a family can generally eat for under $20.

8. Festival Of Trees

Description: Beautifully decorated Christmas trees are on display for about four days in early December; you can view them without charge, but a donation of a can of food is appreciated. The festival is sponsored by the businesswomen’s community service organization, Zonta. At the end of the display period, the trees are auctioned at a gala event, and proceeds go to charity. You can take home a decorated tree and help out those less fortunate at the same time.

Description: The hatchery grounds and D.C. Booth historic home are lovely places and the perfect backdrop for a Christmas event. The house is decorated in the finery of a long-ago Victorian Christmas, and the many trees on the grounds are draped in finery of their own. You can take a tour of the house and museum and enjoy the special displays and events. It’s all free and a charming way to spend a holiday Sunday in early December.
