Description: The Austin Independent School District puts great emphasis on providing high-quality education for children of all races, economic levels, and English-speaking proficiencies. The district offers a solid core curriculum that stresses math, science, reading, and writing as well as special opportunities for a full range of students, from academically superior to those with learning difficulties.AISD provides educational opportunities for about 84,000 students at 120 schools and special campuses. The district’s commitment to children is evidenced by the number of national honors and rankings it has received in recent years. Austin has achieved a higher than average number of National Merit Scholars and has outperformed other Texas schoolchildren on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Nearly 63 percent of the district’s students are listed as economically disadvantaged, and 29 percent have limited English proficiency. The student population at individual schools within this huge district reflects the ethnic and economic makeup of the residents themselves. So within AISD some schools have high concentrations of upper-income families while other schools have a higher concentration of economically disadvantaged families. AISD is proud of its record of regularly increasing enrollment of minority and economically disadvantaged students in honors programs and advanced-placement classes. But in a large urban district, the challenge to continue producing top-quality graduates is staggering. TEA rates AISD “Academically Acceptable,” although 32 of its schools are “Exemplary” and 36 are “Recognized.”
