Description: One of Virginia’s most celebrated prep schools, Episcopal is small, personal, and highly demanding of its 435 students. Founded in 1839 and mere minutes from the Nation’s Capital, this coed boarding school for ninth through twelfth graders follows a tradition-rich Honor System that has created an environment of openness among students and teachers. Students follow a challenging liberal arts–based curriculum rich with advanced placement courses. Technology plays a big role, through such features as two computer labs, dormitories wired for Internet access, and a requirement that all ninth and tenth graders have their own laptops. The school takes advantage of the myriad resources of the neighboring District through field trips and internships at political and cultural institutions. Many students also spend time studying abroad. The school boasts numerous athletic facilities, including a 2,800-seat stadium, seven playing fields, and a six-lane, 400-meter outdoor track. Spirituality plays an important role in campus life, with students regularly attending chapel and volunteering for community service. The 130-acre, wooded campus resembles a small college, complete with historic buildings.
