Description: The privately-owned Mattaponi Indian Museum, built here in 1954, features tribal artifacts, including a stone necklace said to have been worn by Pocahontas and a tomahawk said to have been used by Opechancanough in the 1622 attacks. Some ancient artifacts on display date from 5000 BC. Classes in Mattaponi history, beadwork, cooking, Indian medicine, crafts, dance, and lore are taught at the nearby trading post. The museum is open on Sat and Sun from 2 to 5 p.m. or by arrangement. Admission is $1. Arrangements must be made in advance for classes at the trading post. The fee for each two-hour program participant is $2.50.
