Carey (him) and Jimmie (her) Leu have a 2400 square foot shop in downtown Arab. The services provided are clock restoration as well as sharpening of scissors, knives, cliper blades, and tools. Carey has been repairing clocks for 15 plus years in the area. Previous shops were located on Main Street South, Hiway 231 next to Dairy Queen, and on our property.
The shop is a complete miniature machine shop with multiple lathes and mills. Carey's favorite is a micro lathe made in the US about 50 years ago. There are many tools specialized for clock rebuilding.
A typical clock rebuild consists of disassembly, detailed cleaning, inspection of all parts, replacement of worn parts (either purchased or made in the shop), reassembly, adjustments, and time regulation.
The sharpening service (Jimmie's thing) provides sharpening of scissors using the Wolff Industry Twice As Sharp system. Professional and household scissors are sharpened. This sytem is also used to sharpen garden tools, mower blades, planer blades, etc. A special hollow grind knife sharpener is used for knives. Hair clipper blades are sharpened on a special machine from Nebraska Blades. Nebraska blades specializes in clipper blade sharpening machines and is considered to be the industry standard.
We would like to find a trainee for the shop next year to allow us to keep up with our demand better (we are presently scheduling shop work for clocks 5 months in advance). Sharpening is turned around the same day many times,
Upcoming services will include lamp repair, laminating, and battery repair.
