Dogs R Trainable is a small personalized training center for puppies and dogs 8 weeks and older. The main instructor has trained a large variety of breeds and crosses of breeds for over 20 years. At this time private lessons are being offered Saturday mornings at the downtown Sidney location. We hope to be able to offer agility lessons next summer in a Potter location. The lessons come in sets of 8 one hour sessions where the owner is instructed on how to teach their pet how to obey basic control commands, some tricks, and to end problem behaviors such as jumping, mouthing, and housebreaking issues.
Our training program is unique in that while we have an indoor training facility. We actually do a good part of our training one on one on the streets of down town Sidney when the weather permits. By training in real life situations out in public the dog learns to focus on his handler and to ignore the day to day distractions that are encountered in the public. This type of real life training has been proven to be the most effective by service dog trainers and the benefit to the family pet is overwhelming positive when compared to dogs who only train in the home yard or in secluded training areas.
It is a fallacy that you can't teach old dogs new tricks. If your dog is in good health and a non-biter training can be accomplished. It is easier of course to start with a young puppy. Both pure breds and mixed breeds have equal learning capabilities. Having a male or a female pet also has no bearing on trainability. Though some studies have shown that male dogs will work "harder" for female handlers and female dogs will work "harder" for her male handler. But all dogs regardless of breeding or handler are fully capable of learning good manners.
A sample of a typical training schedule would be week one, learning to keep the lead loose, to sit and to down on the first command regardless of distraction. The owner would then go home and practice these lessons at least twice a day at home and several times a week out in the public area. Until by week eight the dog could be heeling and coming to heel when told, sitting automatically when the owner stops walking, sitting when told on first command regardless of distraction and holding a sit stay regardless of distraction. The dog could also be downing on first command and remaining down until instructed to move, standing still for grooming and medical visits, coming when called, started on jumping solid, bar and broad jumps, and learning such good manners as laying under benches rather than sprawled across walkway, carrying small packages for the owner and stopping at curbs and waiting patiently for traffic to pass without bothering other passerby's. The reliability and level of training would of course depend on the amount of work the owner put in their "homework" with the dog. But it can be done with work. All training is done ON LEAD and by adult family members.
Because the training is one on one and each lesson scheduled by appointment I am only at my office as needed for training purposes.
