Utahans held some 745,000 ordinary life insurance policies in 2001 with a total value of $78.5 billion; total value for all categories of life insurance (ordinary, group, industrial, and credit) was $108.2 billion. Death benefits paid that year totaled $258.7 million. As of 1997, there were 15 property and casualty and 17 life and health insurance companies incorporated or organized in the state. In 2001, property and casualty insurers wrote over $2.3 billion in premiums. That year, there were 2,351 flood insurance policies in force in the state, with a total value of $327,543.
