Newark: Geography and Climate

Newark is located in northeastern New Jersey along the west bank of the Passaic River and Newark Bay. The city lies 8 miles west of lower Manhattan Island and is a thirty-minute drive from New York City. The Newark area, which is part of the Piedmont Region, is flat and marshy with some high points to the southwest and northeast. Newark's weather is greatly influenced by the city's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Winds, mostly easterly and southeasterly, can moderate temperatures, which range from very high in the summer to very low in the winter. Fall and winter storms, called "northeasters," blow off the ocean and account for much of the city's rain and snow.
