Description: The Pioneer Press, based in St. Paul and commonly referred to as “the St. Paul paper,” is Minnesota’s oldest newspaper, founded as the Minnesota Pioneer in 1849. Today the paper is one of the Twin Cities’ two dailies, providing especially strong coverage of St. Paul but also reporting news from Minneapolis and across the metro area. While newsroom cuts have (as at the competing Star Tribune) reduced the extent of the paper’s coverage, it’s still the St. Paul paper, a morning ritual for thousands of Minnesotans.

Description: When Norma Smith Olson and Kathy Magnuson decided to start a women’s publication in the Twin Cities in 1984, they made a deliberate choice to make it a for-profit publication—just to prove their point that women’s issues make for important news that will attract readers and advertisers. Still run by Olson and Magnuson today, the monthly Minnesota Women’s Press continues to provide a fair and open-minded view of women in politics and feminist issues that affect women and men alike, as well as profiles and interviews with political personalities and prominent women in the Twin Cities.

Description: KSTP is one of many Hubbard Broadcasting Inc. media stations in the Twin Cities. KSTP specializes in sports and political talk radio. Description: KCMP, more popularly known as The Current, debuted in 2005, driving up the number of Twin Cities Minnesota Public Radio stations to three. The Current plays largely indie rock, blessedly commercial-free and with a welcome emphasis on local artists. Nitpicking about The Current’s playlists is a favorite pastime among local music geeks, but nonetheless the station has become a pillar of the music scene and a reliably good pick on the radio dial—not many cities have such forward-thinking public radio programmers.

It’s the station of choice at relatively hip dentists’ offices across the metro area.

Description: ABC-affiliated KSTP is recognized locally and nationally as an innovator in the television industry. KSTP was the first television station in the Twin Cities, signing on the air on April 27, 1948. It also was the first color television station and the first in the nation to broadcast daily newscasts.News is important to KSTP and its “Eyewitness News Team.” KSTP was a local pioneer in investigative journalism and weather reporting. It is also the only affiliated station in the Twin Cities that remains under local ownership, which is reflected in the station’s news and programming.

Description: WUCW, which changed its call letters from KMWB in 2006, is the Twin Cities CW network affiliate. There are also plenty of reruns of recent sitcoms to sate the viewing appetite of Twin Citians.
