Description: Crystal City, a conglomeration of office buildings, high-rise condos, and big hotels, isn’t going to win any awards for aesthetics, but it sure is convenient. Same can be said for the Hyatt Regency here, a 685-unit hotel that offers a health club, an outdoor swimming pool, and a lounge and rooftop restaurant with a view of D.C. Guests receive complimentary shuttle service to Reagan National Airport or Metro, barely three minutes away. Crystal City is also close to the Pentagon, downtown D.C., and Old Town Alexandria.

5. The Westin Arlington Gateway

Description: Although North Arlington’s Ballston and Clarendon neighborhoods have welcomed a host of new condos, restaurants, and retail shops, the neighborhoods haven’t seen much hotel development. In 2006, however, the Westin chain broke with this trend and opened the new Arlington Gateway property. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, featuring Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed (and Heavenly Dog Bed) and Heavenly Bath, complete with double showerheads. It’s a short walk to the Ballston Metro station and the Ballston Common Mall (see the Shopping chapter).
