Clarke Historical Museum

Each year, some 15,000 visitors discover the marvels of Eureka's past at the Clarke Historical Museum (sometimes referred to erroneously as Clarke Memorial Museum). Located in Old Town on the corner of 3rd and E streets, the museum occupies what once was a bank building built I 1912. Its exhibits trace the history of Humboldt County from its incorporation in 1853 to the present, emphasizing the late 19th century.

On display are such items as clothing, furniture, quilts, glassware, farm implements, and other objects from the Victorian period. In the museum's Native American Wing features an internationally acclaimed collection of indigenous baskets, ceremonial regalia, tools and arrowheads, as well as an authentic dugout canoe and a miniature plank house.

The Gift Shop and Bookstore offers Sandy Factor's Jewelry as well as dozens of books on local history. Also available are volumes on Native American studies, photography, cookbooks, and even the fantasy and science fiction works of local author and museum curator Pam F. Service.

The Clarke Historical Museum is Humboldt County's official museum, serving all schools, residents, researchers, and tourists alike. The address is 240 E Street, Eureka, California 95501-0433. Hours of operation are from 9am to 4pm on Wednesday through Saturday. There is no charge for admission.
