Deaf West Theatre

The Deaf West Theatre, located at 5112 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA, has been recognized as the premier sign language theatre in the United States. Founded in 1991, the theatre has produced over 40 plays and 4 musicals to date.

Deaf West brings theatre professionals from the hearing world to collaborate with the deaf and hard of hearing actors to perform American Sign Language adaptations ranging from classic and contemporary works to original productions.

In the theatre's productions, spoken English and American Sign Languages are blended together for both hearing and deaf patrons. With this unique approach, the visual and verbal languages compliment each other enhancing the theatrical experience for all.

The Deaf West Theatre also provides an educational program for the hearing disabled students of Los Angeles. The Dramatic Gestures program strives to improve literacy and communication skills while expanding students' perspectives about the abilities and contributions of the deaf community.

The 90-seat theatre is equipped with a state-of-the-art sound system, an infrared headphone system and captioning capabilities. The box office opens 30 minutes before show time and there is no assigned seating. Many of the major film production studies are within a ten-minute drive of the theatre.
