Echo Lakes Hiking Trail - Lake Tahoe, California - Year-Round Alpine Lakes Hiking

A number of alpine lakes can be seen while traversing the moderately graded Echo Lakes Hiking Trail. The trailhead can be found at the parking area near Lower Echo Lake. From here, a relatively flat and well trodden path leads two and a half miles along the North Shore to the northwest corner of Upper Echo Lake, offering splendid lake views all the way. The picturesque islands and sheer granite cliffs of Upper Echo Lake make the journey well worthwhile, and a boat shuttle can be used for the return.

This hike can be taken in winter as well as at other times during the year. It is especially popular among beginning snowshoers because the elevation does not change much. A more challenging trek can be made of it by continuing to the far end of Upper Echo Lake, for six and a half miles roundtrip. Both of the oblong lakes freeze over in winter, creating a large open expanse for exploration when the snowpack is substantial, although areas near inlets and outlets should be avoided, as they thaw quickly.

Echo Lakes Hiking Trail is the southern gateway into the majestic Desolation Wilderness. It also provides access to Lake Tamarack (4 miles away), Lake of the Woods (5 miles) and Aloha Lake (6 miles). A wilderness permit from the Forest Service is required. To get there, take U.S. Highway 50 to Echo Summit, and then follow Johnson Pass Road to Lower Echo Lake.
