La Purisima State Historical Park

As the most thoroughly restored mission in the state of California, La Purisima Mission State Historical Park covers nearly 2000 acres in the heart of Santa Barbara's wine and golf country.

La Purisima Mission was founded on Dec. 8, 1787, by Father Presidente Fermin de Lasuen on land that was the home of the Chumash people and Spanish settlers. The original settlement covered nearly 470 square miles and was widely known for its production of blankets and its herds of cattle and sheep (over 24,000).

Guests can experience life in the 1820's at this state park where ten of the original hundred or so adobe buildings have been restored and house authentic furniture. Additionally, the water system and aqueduct have been completely restored. Guests will see native plants typical of a mission garden and animals normally kept at a mission.

Guests can enjoy self-guided tours nearly every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It closes only on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. La Purisima State Historical Park also has picnic facilities and 25 miles of trails.

A 30-minute drive along the coastline from Santa Barbara will take visitors to La Purisima State Historical Park. Nearby can be found other attractions, including the Dutch-influenced city of Solvang; Chumash Resort Hotel, Spa and Casino; and Santa Barbara County Wineries.
